GOOD NEWS - 3rd July
As always plenty of good news to share on what's happening in and around Fleetwood, to support your wellbeing and celebrate our amazing community ...
Last week our Roving Reporter Reece joined the launch of Wyre Moving More, meeting many of the organisations involved to hear about the exciting plans to help local residents enjoy physical activity and improve their health.
Many of you will have attended a recording of BBC4's Any Questions at Marine Hall last Friday evening - an interesting and lively debate. If you weren't there or didn't catch the show, listen now on BBC Sounds here.
Fleetwood Town Community Trust has launched a new football session.
It's on Fridays at Poolfoot, Thornton Cleveleys from 1pm to 2pm, a slowed-down kickabout with an emphasis on having fun. Suitable for most levels of mobility, you can even take part using seats and as it's in the huge inflatable dome so the weather can't spoil the game. No need to book, turn up on the day or contact toby.cherry@fleetwoodtownfc.com
It's the Quarter-Final stage of the Euros from Friday, just eight nations left and that means we also have just eight groups who can win our Community Sweepstake.
England are representing Blue Light, Bimble & Brew
France are representing The Chill Lounge
Germany are representing North Euston Tea Dance
The Netherlands are representing Behind Closed Doors
Portugal are representing LPM Dance Fusion
Spain are representing Jars of Joy
Switzerland are representing Harmony & Health
Turkey are representing Wyre & Fylde Community Defibrillators
Who will come through this weekend's games ... can England keep playing so poorly and still win ... is it coming home?
COMMUNITY EVENTS TO ENJOY AND SUPPORT
Fleetwood & District Choral Society are hosting an "afternoon of informal and enjoyable singing" on Saturday 6th July, 2pm to 5pm at Trinity Baptist Church on Poulton Road. All the music is supplied, no experience necessary and there's a break for tea and cake ... all welcome!
Good luck to all the teams playing in the Rachel Duncan Memorial Tournament at Poolfoot on Sunday 7th July. Open to females aged 16 and over the competition remembers a much-loved and missed young woman and team-mate. Matches start at 9.30am. Places are fully booked but supporters are appreciated.
Also on Sunday, Fleetwood High School is the venue for Highbury Morris Dancers home competition for 2024. Eight other troupes will be taking part as well as the hosts - it promises to be a fun event for all. For more information about the group - see their Facebook page.
GOOD NEWS FLASH: Highbury Morris Dancers have been filmed this morning as part of a promo for Britain's Got Talent, to be screened early next year! More on their Facebook.
SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT
Fleetwood Community Comic Con is a new group for people who enjoy cos-play and everything associated with science-fiction, super-hero and iconic movies and books. They have a busy Facebook page up and running, have held their first open meeting and there are plans for a huge event in 2025 at Marine Hall Fleetwood. As part of Tram Sunday on 21st July the group will be filming a promo ... meeting and changing into costume from 9.30am at The Senior Citizens Hall, Warrenhurst Road before shooting from 10am and joining the parade at 10.45am.
If you are daft for Darth Vader or a super fan of Superman, find out more about the group by visiting their Facebook page
GOOD NEWS FROM OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS
Following the spectacular display of decorated Elmers in Blackpool, pupils at Larkholme Primary welcomed back their little friend this week. The children took part in themed arts & crafts activities ahead of a permanent home for little Elmer being announced.
It's a busy time of the year for the schools with sports days, excursions and more. We hope the sun comes out to play and everyone has a fab time tomorrow at St Wulstan's & St Edmunds Academy's Summer Fair.
Congratulations to Shakespeare Primary pupils, brother and sister, Alfie and Sophie who climbed England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, recently and raised £1,500 for the Victims Support charity. The school said, "An absolutely fantastic challenge and for a great cause! We at Shakespeare are very proud of their efforts!"
