GOOD NEWS - May 26th

This week's bulletin marks 2 years of the 'Good News'.

Going right back to the first days of the pandemic, despite the challenges our community has faced, there have also been so many reasons to be cheerful and it's been a pleasure sharing a few of them with you. There's been around 100 editions of the bulletin, passing on hundreds of activities, events and opportunities from and for the Fleetwood community: a fantastic tribute to all the residents, community groups and organisations living and working in the Town.

Over the next few weeks you'll notice some new features in the 'Good News' so now's the time to spread the word - please pass on this bulletin to somebody you know who'd like to receive a copy every week and encourage them to subscribe at this link.

Thank you for your continued support, contributions and feedback over the past 2 years.

In these testing times, lovely to hear of something being reduced in price.

Harmony & Health sessions at Thornton Little Theatre (Tuesdays, 10.30) and at Marine Hall (Tuesdays, 1.30pm) will be just £1pp for the next few months at least thanks to the continued support of Wyre Council.

The weekly singalongs have been a fantastic boost to the wellbeing of everyone taking part but with financial pressures and issues with transport, some members have had to step back lately. This reduction will really help people to attend and also encourage some new faces, and voices, to join the fun. If you haven’t discovered the sheer joy of Harmony & Health yet, see their Facebook page or give Shirley a call on 07940 030925.

Plenty of arts & crafts for the family to enjoy over the half-term school holidays, Jubilee weekend and beyond. The Little Cod Club is from 12 noon to 4pm on Saturday 28th May at Affinity Lancashire Shopping Outlet.

It’s FREE fun, games, and crafts designed to enhance creativity, motor skills, and self-esteem. Each month there’s a new theme. The session is supervised and families can sign up for a free membership. Full details: Affinity Lancashire website.

As part of the Jubilee Celebrations, Fleetwood Market has a family fun day from 10am to 4pm on Friday 3rd June. There will be lots of art and craft workshops for all ages to enjoy and to create commemorative plates, Jubilee flags and even their very own beautiful crowns!

Although the Jubilee is the main focus for events and celebrations at the moment, there’s still a lot more happening!

Wednesday 1st June is the start of Volunteers Week 2022 and the theme this year is ‘thank you’ to all the amazing volunteers.

Volunteering is a great way to support your community and is also incredibly rewarding for the individual themselves.

Mark Trent from Lancashire Volunteer Partnership will be with us at the Wellbeing & Community Information Centre, Affinity Lancashire Outlet Shopping from 1pm to 3pm with advice and opportunities for volunteering.

It’s also our next Open Meeting that evening (1st June) so we’d like to invite local committee members and event organisers along to tell us about their work.

There’s no need to pre-book, just come along and when you want to, share your good news and hopefully recruit some new volunteers. The Open Meeting is from 6.30pm until around 8pm at Emmanuel at the Mount, Mount Road, Fleetwood hosted by our very own chair of residents and volunteer, Pauline Kennedy.

And as another ‘thank you’ event next week we’re hosting a FREE coffee morning at Emmanuel on Thursday 2nd June from 10am to 12 noon.

If you are lucky enough to have an extra day off work or just want to meet some new people, we’d love our many friends in the community to join us during the morning for a cuppa, cakes and pastries and a good old natter.

We hope to see you all soon!

We try not to tell you what you should do but quitting smoking IS a massive step towards better health and Tuesday is 'World No Tobacco Day'.

Enjoy everyday activities and hobbies that bit more, there's long-term benefits to your wellbeing and reduce the risk of passive smoking among friends and family. Research has found smokers who quit for 6 weeks or more are happier and also experience less anxiety and depression. Finding the strength and self-discipline to stop is hard but help is available locally from the Quit Squad. Find out more about their support by calling 0800 328 6297 or online here.

Places are still available on the next Talent4Care programme starting on 6th June and guaranteeing an interview with providers in health and social care.

If you are looking for a career in healthcare, this 6 week course can be a great step. It is held in Blackpool but help with travel and childcare is available. Full details are available on the Career Academy website or by email to Helen.Cook@blackpool.ac.uk

A reminder of our Chatter Café at YMCA Lofthouse Building on London Street, tomorrow (Friday 27th May) from 10am to 11.30am.

Drop if for a brew with local residents, the Healthier Fleetwood team and the social prescribers. Chatter Café is the last Friday of the month, same place, same time.

And finally … tomorrow (Friday 27th May) is also ‘National Fish & Chip Day’, an event we need little excuse to celebrate in Fleetwood!

As part of a balanced diet, fish and fish oil have great health benefits so whether you're picking up a takeaway or dine-in at your favourite chippy, we hope you enjoy your meal in good company and have a great weekend.

If you'd like to know more about anything we've shared here, please do contact us and we'd love to hear your 'Good News' and events for future editions.

Until the next time, take care.
