Conversations from Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting, 7th May.
Although it wasn’t our busiest meeting, it was as always a wonderful evening hearing Good News for and from the Fleetwood community …
Kate shared there’s a new Post-Natal exercise class starting at YMCA Fleetwood. Sessions are every Thursday, 11am in the new studio, hosted by Gemma from C Shaw Wellbeing on behalf of Wyre Council.

Pauline thanked Emmanuel Church for their hospitality, then John said he was making plans for the next Feast For The Nations on Saturday 28th June. More details to follow … Pauline added that these events are always a joy to attend.
Elizabeth is one of the volunteers leading the Life Together peer support group for women, meeting on Thursday afternoons at Emmanuel. It’s a friendly hour or two … conversation, kindness and a cuppa.

Sandra was representing Fleetwood Rotary at this month’s meeting and reminded us of the Centenary celebrations for the Fleetwood branch starting this year. ‘Books in Bags’ will be hidden around the Town for people to find and enjoy, plus a small knitted doll – offers to make more are very welcome and any left over will be donated to the emergency services as comfort toys for children. Other projects from Rotary include planting apple trees.
Pat updated us on her groups … the self-led arts on Mondays and Young at Heart friendship group on Tuesdays (both at Fleetwood Library), and the Over The Rainbow bereavement group, now at YMCA Lofthouse building every other Wednesday, alternate weeks with the Social Prescribing group.
> For more on these groups, please contact us at Healthier Fleetwood
Wendy is one of the Fleetwood Social Prescribers, there are only 2 in the team, very busy and have a long waiting list but their support is always appreciated.

Lesley from KCA cancer support group said they had raised over £500 at their Jumble Sale last month and passed on unsold items to a national charity. The new fishing lake at Kincraig (Bispham) will host an Open Day on 28th June 12noon – 4pm with loads of activities & games, bouncy castle, food, live music from Fleetwood’s Lucas Williams and a ‘mystery’ local celebrity – all welcome! The lake will be a quiet place for cancer patients and their families to enjoy … a long-term lease has been secured.
Vicky and Aliyah were attending their first meeting, on behalf of YMCA Fylde Coast, to tell us about new help for children and adults. ‘Y-Move On’ will support residents under 30 to maintain their tenancy, working with the individual and the housing association or landlord. ‘Y-Mentoring’ is available for 11-16 year olds at risk of homelessness by building relationships to improve self-development and resilience.
Alan is one of the organisers for the first ever Fleetwood Community Comic Con, on Sunday 20th July at Marine Hall. Thanks to their fundraising efforts admission and all the activities on the day will be free. Alan said he hopes that people new to comic cons and cos-play will visit to find out what’s happening, joining the enthusiasts who support these events all year round across the UK. New guests from film and TV have been added to the line-up.
Before reading her poem for the month, Anne said that the Wednesday craft group at Fleetwood Library was knitting and crocheting bears to support a children's reading challenge next month.
And ahead of closing the meeting, Pauline congratulated Professor Mark Spencer, due to present his inaugural lecture at Lancaster University the following evening … this went very well, thoroughly enjoyed by the audience and included some impromptu singing!
P.S. One of our regular contributors, Julie from Alcohol Free Women, couldn’t attend this month but did send us an update to share … the next meeting of the Fleetwood group is on Saturday 31st May, 11am in the Health & Wellbeing Centre, Dock Street and Julie is hoping to start a drop-in at the new Community Café at The HUB Fleetwood later in the Summer.
The next Open Meeting is on Wednesday 4th June, 6.30pm at Emmanuel Church, Mount Road, Fleetwood – all welcome!
