GOOD NEWS - 30th November

Following the fantastic Festive Lights Switch On last Saturday, Fleetwood will be shining again this weekend!

'Fleetwood Lights' is a spectacular 3-day FREE show, coming to town as the finale of the Fleetwood High Street Heritage Action Zone Cultural Programme. It runs from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd December between 5pm and 9pm, taking in iconic landmarks with beautiful light-based artworks. Don't miss The Chomper at Marine Hall plus mesmerising displays at Fleetwood Museum, the Mount Gardens, Pharos Lighthouse and Lower Lighthouse.

Next week is National Grief Awareness Week and many of the partner organisations working in Fleetwood are supporting events and training opportunities.

We are proud to join Fleetwood Trust, Fleetwood Primary Care Network, Macmillan Cancer Support, and Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to launch Fleetwood's 'Compassionate Community'. The campaign is about creating safe spaces for people to openly talk about their experiences of grief and loss. It's also understanding there is no 'right way' to grieve and helping an individual to find their path during challenging of times. The first event is the Better Together Cafe on Tuesday 5th December, 1pm to 3pm, at the Macmillan Information Centre in The Hub, the former Fleetwood Hospital, Bold Street. If you or somebody you know would benefit from attending please do pop in and say hello, you'll be made very welcome. Details of future events and opportunities to join community training sessions will be shared soon. For more about National Grief Awareness Week, see The Good Grief Trust.

A group of ex-servicemen from Fleetwood and the Fylde Coast are at Westminster next week to raise awareness of Veterans' welfare.

Central to the group's work is requesting the Ministry of Defence make contact with Armed Forces personnel 6 months after they leave service, to support their mental health and wellbeing. The visit follows great work so far including The Big Swim to the Isle Of Man earlier this year.

Congratulations to The Capricorn Singers, many of them Fleetwood residents, for their success this week at the Lancashire Choir of the Year ceremony.

The group picked up the most votes to claim the 'People's Choice' award and were runners-up for the main title. The Capricorn Singers celebrate their 40th anniversary next year. To find out more about getting involved - see Facebook.

There's a new group starting next week for local residents in the prime of their lives.

Young@Heart! is for people aged 65 and over and is all about meeting up for good times in good company. The group will get together at Fleetwood Library on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 12 noon for a cuppa, conversation and activities. They will also be planning day trips and social events in the future. The group has been set up with support from the Fleetwood Social Prescribers, the members of Young@Heart! will be hosting the gatherings each week and taking the lead in the months ahead. There's no need to pre-book, just pop in, say hello and start making new friends!

It's the last Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting of the year on Wednesday evening, 6th December at Emmanuel Mount Church, Mount Road Fleetwood.

If you've not been to a meeting before or for a while, please do come along to hear more about what's on in the community from the local residents and groups making it happen. The meetings are also a forum for new ideas, somewhere to make connections and find support for your suggestions. More than anything the meetings are a celebration of the positive side of life in Fleetwood. always enjoyable, often with a surprise or two and some appropriate festive refreshments. We start at 6.30pm, usually finish around 8pm - all welcome and bring a friend! We don't hold a meeting in January so we'd love to see you next week.

There is one good excuse for not attending the Open Meeting ... that's if you are supporting the Fleetwood Sea Cadets Chocolate Bingo Evening, also on Wednesday from 7pm to 9.30pm. You could even do both by nipping along to the Sea Cadet base on Princes Way/Beach Road after our meeting ends. See Facebook for more information.
