GOOD NEWS - 30th July

Updated: Aug 13

We start this week with news of another successful community-focussed event ...

The 'coffee with a copper and councillor' event held in the Heart of the Hub cafe last week was well supported and well received. Local Neighbourhood Officer PCSO Nick 7259 and Pharos ward councillors sat with residents to exchange ideas and discuss ways to improve the area. It's part of the ongoing initiative by Fleetwood Area Police to collaborate with the community, be accessible and visible. They say,

"We understand that not everyone can attend these events. If you would like to receive local updates and contribute towards being part of your wards, visit the In The Know website."

> For more information you can also email: 7259@lancashire.police.uk

The Volunteer Centre Wyre has a couple of opportunities to join their team ...

Art Support Group volunteer - Supporting the new weekly sessions on Friday afternoons at St Mary's School in Fleetwood. The role involves welcoming the attendees, assisting with setting up and running the art activities, encouraging creativity and involvement, tidying and packing down afterwards. Starting from Friday 1st August, 1-3pm for 11 weeks.

Drop-In Support Volunteer - This role is based at the Manor Hub in Cleveleys. You'll help create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere for residents accessing advice, support, or simply a cuppa and a chat. Make and serve hot drinks, help set-up and tidy-up. The drop-ins start from September, Tuesdays, 10am - 12noon.

Both roles suit friendly, reliable people who enjoy speaking to others or looking to add to their skills and confidence. The Volunteer Centre Wyre is at The HUB Fleetwood, North Albert Street.

Bikes of a different sort ... Good Luck to The Fleetwood Makos, formerly Fleetwood Swimming Club for their 24-hour spinning challenge next month.

It's going to be an exciting, high-energy fundraiser to support renovation of their community clubhouse and investment in local sport and youth development. The Mega Spin Challenge takes place at the YMCA Fleetwood from 6pm on Friday 15th August to 6pm on Saturday 16th.

Hopefully it won't take any of the runners 24 hours to complete this year's Fleetwood Half Marathon on Sunday 24th August.

The annual event takes in a circular route offering a fantastic backdrop of the Wyre Estuary and across to the Lake District. Organised by Fylde Coast Runners, registration is from 8am on the day at Rossall Point ahead of the 10am start. Everyone receives a commemorative medal at the finish line, along with drinks and snacks to help you recover from your run. Prizes are also awarded to individual race winners and age categories.

It's a busy time for the team from The Bay: A Blueprint for Recovery ... they have several events over the next few weeks using the environment to support wellbeing.

Healthier Fleetwood is delighted to be among the community partners invited to attend the Baton of Hope event which calls through the Town on September 1st.

Baton of Hope is a national movement to prevent suicide and save lives through proactive change. Locally the baton will be relayed between locations across the Fylde Coast including Fleetwood.

Partner organisations will attend an open event at Highbury Stadium from 2pm to 4pm. It's an opportunity to share their work in the areas of mental health and suicide prevention ... with each other and with the general public. The baton itself will arrive at Highbury Stadium for 3pm before returning to Blackpool.

We'll be sharing much more about the Baton of Hope in the week's ahead - for now if you are available, please make a note of the time and place ... we look forward to seeing you.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
