GOOD NEWS - 30th April

Updated: 10 hours ago

As we move from April into May, we hope you are able to enjoy the lovely sunshine and there's another Bank Holiday weekend to look forward to, packed with things to see and do across Fleetwood!

It's the 80th Anniversary of VE Day on the 8th May so several events are themed towards the 1940's and remembering those who served including the Fleetwood Town Council 'Family Funday' in Memorial Park on Saturday 3rd.

There will be military displays and re-enactments, children's entertainment and fun fair rides, Commando Rugby School, a climbing wall, live music and a disco, food and community stalls hosting loads of activities! The event starts at 10am with local veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces and Cadets Force marching from the main entrance of the pPark towards the cenotaph. Then there's a short service led by Rev George Ayoma, the National Anthem and last post.

Admission to the event is FREE until 4pm

Also on Saturday 3rd May, Affinity Lancashire host their latest Artisan Street Fayre between 10am and 5pm. You'll find a great range of crafters and small businesses selling their handmade and handcrafted treats, gifts and more.

Onto Sunday 4th and it's this year's Fleetwood Day in Euston Gardens!

The event is 6 hours of live music and entertainment for all ages with bands and performers on stage, majorette displays, Punch & Judy show, fun & games, heritage & community stalls and more. MC for the day, Fleetwood favourite, Joe Boe. Fleetwood Day is an annual event held close to the birthday of the Town's founder Sir Peter Hesketh. This year there's a VE 80 theme with loads of red, white & blue and a 1940’s singalong to close.

There's a Sunset Walk with volunteers from Fleetwood Wellbeing Way on the evening of Sunday 4th May.

Meet at Rossall Point Car Park (next to the Log Cabin) at 7.15pm before setting off around 7.30pm for a short walk along Fleetwood Wellbeing Way, heading to the Mount Pavilion for refreshments and to watch the sun setting over Fleetwood.

The Sunset Walk is also being filmed. The Fleetwood Wellbeing Way began as a community challenge in 2020 supported by Lancashire Mind and the charity would like to hear the thoughts of walkers and local residents at the end of the evening.

It's back to Affinity Lancashire on Monday 5th May for their VE80 celebrations ... an interactive museum, WW2 memorabilia and LIVE entertainment by singer Lilli De Carlo. It's all happening between 12 and 4pm.

VE 80 Beacon Lighting

Thursday 8th May, 8pm

The Mount, Fleetwood

With music from The Flat Cap Three, reflective poems from the community, beacon lighting and a commemorative badge for everyone who attends. There's no need to book, turn up on the night and join the celebrations.

There is still time to play a part in the Beacon Lighting event ... Wyre Council invites residents to send in their poems, to be read out on the evening. There's also a short lantern parade from the gatehouse up to the pavilion, just before the beacon is lit. Lanterns and lights will be provided.

What a fantastic line-up for the next week or so ... please support as many of these community events as you can and spread the word!

You may remember film-maker Anton Arenko produced a short documentary last year, celebrating the Fleetwood to Knott End Ferry service.

'End To End' includes interviews with many familiar faces from the community and looks at the fascinating history of the service as well as the challenges that lie ahead. It has already been screened to appreciative audiences on both sides of the estuary and has also featured at several film festivals around the UK in recent months. End To End will be available to view on You Tube from Friday 7pm on 2nd May ...

It's the perfect time to launch the Grow The Tallest Sunflower challenge ...

thank you to the Fleetwood Wellbeing Way team for linking up with us again.

  • Who will be this year's champion, following Charlie who grew this whopper in 2024.

  • Will two-time previous winner Carol regain her crown?

FREE seed bags and recording sheets can be collected from the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre at The HUB on Tuesdays and Fridays, 10am - 2pm from next week. Also, the first 100 visitors to Healthier Fleetwood's stall at Fleetwood Day can pick up a bag AND the Fleetwood Wellbeing Way team will have them at the Sunset walk - both on Sunday 4th May.

Measure your plants regularly then post photos and heights on the Facebook page for Fleetwood Wellbeing Way to see how you are doing in this year's competition. The closing date to submit the final details of your sunflower in early September so we'll remind everyone nearer the time.

Two of Fleetwood's primary schools are looking for support to complete their community projects ...

Chaucer Primary School need to replace the playing surface of their MUGA, multi-use games area. This is a vital wellbeing facility for the students and also the local community. Please take a moment to watch a video and hear from the students themselves why this is so important.

Flakefleet Primary School are making plans to host their popular 'Flakefest'. After last year's successful event, celeb and local bands will come together to rub shoulders with Fleetwood folk to create another night to remember!

A huge thank you to the amazing team from Tia's Crown for hosting their first-ever 'Mental Health Champions' Awards Ceremony at Fleetwood Town FC last Friday.

So many wonderful individuals and organisations were recognised for their work in the community, across Fleetwood and the Fylde Coast. It was a lovely surprise for us to receive the 'Special Recognition Award' from the Tia's Crown trustees - presented by Alison to Pauline and Karen, joined by Kelly from Coach & Shine representing our partners. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners including Fleetwood's 'Joyfest' event.

The next Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting is Wednesday, 7th May, 6.30pm at Emmanuel Mount Church.

All welcome to hear Good News from some of the wonderful individuals and groups in the Fleetwood Community, suggest ideas for something new or just enjoy a brew ... we'll see you there!

A reminder that the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre at The HUB Fleetwood is now open two days a week.

In addition to the popular Friday sessions you can now call into the Centre on Tuesdays ... both days from 10am to 2pm. You will discover details of well over 100 groups, activities and events in and around the Fleetwood community, all supporting your health and wellbeing. We had several visitors on our first Tuesday who hadn't been in before, they were all surprised how much was going on across Fleetwood!

Please use the Bold Street entrance, follow the signage along the corridors past Macmillan Information and Support Service and Blackpool and The Fylde College.

We will continue to review and add to our hours as other facilities open which bring us to the fantastic news that ONE FYLDE will be the operators of the new Community Cafe.

This amazing organisation supports adults and young people who have learning disabilities and autism, ensuring they are treated with respect and enabled to live the best life possible. Already supporting over 200 people across the Fylde Coast, many from Fleetwood, joining the partners at The Hub will literally open new doors for their incredible work in the community.

A warm welcome to our new neighbours - we can't wait to see what's next!

Please keep sending in your GOOD NEWS to share, until the next time ... take care.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
