GOOD NEWS - 2nd July

Updated: Jul 13

We are fortunate to have so many amazing community hubs across Fleetwood -places where local residents can meet to make friends, learn new skills and enjoy groups and activities.

Churches and schools, Strive Community Cafe, Mens Shed Fleetwood, Fleetwood Library, Westview Community Association, Boathouse Youth, The YMCA Lofthouse Building and other venues offering a variety of support to all ages.

And at The HUB Fleetwood in the former hospital building, the latest addition to this list will be opening its doors very soon ... the Heart of The Hub Community Cafe operated by staff and volunteers of registered charity One Fylde.

One Fylde say, "We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of our Heart of the Hub community café in Fleetwood! Join us to celebrate this exciting new venture for One Fylde and the people we support. Come along for a warm welcome, a brew and a sweet treat - we’d love to see you!

Heart of The Hub opens to the public on Tuesday 22nd July from 11am with speeches at 12 noon - all welcome.

The Wyre Befriending Service is now up and running and looking for people who would like to help someone overcome loneliness and isolation.

Volunteers provide companionship for the person they are matched with and this could be anything from a cuppa in a café or a walk in the park, to attending a community group or trying out a new hobby together. You can also become a telephone befriender.

Offering your time and an ear to listen could really help to change someone’s life. There's training and ongoing support from the Wyre Council Community team.

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact the Befriending Co-ordinator on 01253 887290, email Befriending@wyre.gov.uk or visit the website www.wyre.gov.uk/befriending for further information.

As part of their Centenary celebrations, Fleetwood Rotary have left books and knitted dolls around the Town for families and children to find.

The book hunt is intended to be fun for everyone taking part and to encourage a love of reading. Bags will be left once a month throughout the year and several have already been found by very happy local residents. Many more activities and events are planned to mark 100 years of Rotary in Fleetwood.

And later this month Fleetwood Library launches their annual 'Reading Heroes' challenge for children with prizes and weekly activities.

It all starts on Saturday 19th July with a special event and a chance to sign up - the theme this year is 'Let's make music'.

Staff at Fleetwood Library also made a discovery in their storeroom recently, copies of a beautiful print depicting HM Queen Victoria, HRH Prince Albert and their children leaving from Fleetwood for London by train, having travelled by sea from Scotland the day before.

The visit took place in September 1847 and it was reported a crowd of 10,000 people were there to see the Royal party. You can pick up a copy of the print, while stocks last, from the Library for a donation to Friends of Fleetwood Library, supporting their events and activities.

A wonderful display of artwork from local residents is about to go on display at Fleetwood's Market House Studios.

The Summer Exhibition showcases the talent of Radka Palmer, Jerry Gordon, Julie Massam, Carolyn Sillis and Annemarie Ciotkowski. You can see the exhibition within The Gallery space at Fleetwood Market, Adelaide Street on market days, 4th July - 16th August.
