GOOD NEWS - 25th June

Updated: 5 days ago

Some fantastic news for Fleetwood was announced earlier this week ... funding for community events and arts projects.

Over £55,000 has been granted by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supported by Wyre Council. It will go towards the costs of Fleetwood’s Festival of Transport; Flakefest; a new event, The Fleetwood Donkey Derby and a mural for the new Civic Memorial Art Trail.

Flakefest, on the playing fields of Flakefleet Primary this Friday, 27th June is open to the whole community. The line-up of singers and musicians includes local performers Lucas Williams, the Harmony & Health singers and is headlined by 90’s pop icon Whigfield.

Fleetwood Festival of Transport on Sunday 20th July celebrates its 40th anniversary and will be packed with exhibits, entertainers, stalls and all the fun of the fair along Lord Street and across the Town Centre.

The first Fleetwood Donkey Derby will be held on The Esplanade on a date in the Autumn. Community groups and businesses will be invited to take part in the costume-character race.

The Civic Memorial Art Trail will be led by Christian Fenn and Hayley Garner, aka Seca One and Aylo from The Big HeArt Projects. The pair will use their skills and extensive contacts within the world of mural art, creating a new addition to the growing trail of stunning large-scale pieces across Fleetwood.

The successful funding bid was put together by the respective event committees plus members of organisations and community groups, now collectively known as the Fleetwood Heritage, Arts & Culture Partnership, a working group of Future Fleetwood, the Town Centre Partnership Board.

Chair of Future Fleetwood, Dave McPartlin said, “It’s great news for Fleetwood that these events and creative projects will be supported. They will give our fantastic community some exciting opportunities to come together, attracting thousands of local residents and visitors for family fun, and generating customers for local businesses. Adding to the trail of amazing murals is also investing in the future, something new alongside everything that Fleetwood has to offer.”

“Forming the Heritage, Arts & Culture Partnership follows the successes we’ve seen in similar initiatives such as the Thrive Partnership which connects children’s health and wellbeing, and Healthier Fleetwood Partnership, a point of contact for community groups. We are looking at other opportunities to ensure Fleetwood always has a voice in the decisions that affect our Town’s future.”

Further details of all the events and projects will be available on their social media pages and websites in the weeks ahead and we'll share all the GOOD NEWS in future bulletins.

As well as all the GOOD NEWS about community events ... what else is happening?

Entries are now open for the Wyre Business Awards 2025! Organised by Wyre Council, these awards shine a spotlight on the outstanding businesses that are driving innovation, creating jobs, and powering the local economy. From small start-ups to established enterprises, the awards recognise success across a wide range of sectors and are completely free to enter.

Categories this year include 'Community and Charity Organisation of the Year', the 'Corporate Social Responsibility' award and an overall 'Business of the Year' award. Healthier Fleetwood was honoured to receive the 'High Street Hero' award at the 2024 ceremony - we can recommend that all organisations take a look at the criteria and consider entering. Good Luck!

Our award from last year is displayed at the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre within The HUB Fleetwood and we're pleased to announce the latest extension to the opening hours.

Starting on 3rd July, the Centre will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10am - 2pm. These hours will continue through the Summer months to support the launch of the new Community Cafe with One Fylde, due to open later in July. We'll review our hours again in the Autumn.

Additionally, for the last three weeks local residents have been attending our Information Centre for a Five Ways To Wellbeing group.

With an extra session to wrap up the course, it's a 6-week programme of support delivered by staff from the NHS Fleetwood Enhanced Primary Care Team. It's informal, based around friendly conversation and activities with some refreshments and designed to improve self-confidence, resilience and happiness.

Anyone interested in attending future groups should discuss this with a health or social care professional who can call 01253 956206 to make a referral.

The Volunteer Centre Wyre, based at The HUB Fleetwood has recently had a fabulous makeover thanks to members of the Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service - King's Trust Team 60.

The Volunteer Centre say, "The young people on this team have absolutely smashed it with their community project, transforming our office space from plain white walls into something truly special. There's incredible murals, positive quotes, colourful handprints and a brilliant new 'Meet the Team' wall. If you're in or around Fleetwood, please pop in and take a look at the new design. It’s well worth a visit! Thank you and well done Team 60, you've made a lasting impact!"

We often share the benefits of physical activity. Taking part in walking football is a great example but it isn't just about playing.

If you are already a qualified referee or someone looking to learn, Fleetwood Town Community Trust and Fleetwood Town Flyers have an exciting opportunity! Volunteer referees are needed for the Flyers weekly sessions, in particular the games on Wednesday afternoons at the Poolfoot Complex in Thornton Cleveleys.

> For more information about refereeing, please email the Trust:

A new, free network for Voluntary, Community, Faith or Social Enterprise (VCFSE) groups delivering activities or support within the Wyre district is being formed.

Rachel Coupe, co-ordinator for Lancashire Association of Councils for Voluntary Service says, "The work you do is so important to your communities but running a volunteer group, charity, club or non-profit organisation comes with challenges and we'd like to help you to connect with others in our sector for peer support, collaboration and the sharing of information, resources and knowledge."

The inaugural meeting is being held on Tuesday 15th July at Wyre Civic Centre, Breck Road, Poulton-le-Fylde. Places are limited but you can also attend online.

For any Fleetwood-based organisations, perhaps with limited resources or access to support, we've invited Rachel to the next Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting, on Wednesday 2nd July at Emmanuel Church, Mount Road, Fleetwood.

You can hear more about the benefits of joining the Wyre VCFSE Peer Network and chat with Rachel over a brew. The Open Meeting is also a chance to hear updates on the many amazing opportunities in the Fleetwood community and a way to suggest something new.

The meeting is 6.30pm to around 8.30pm.

Please keep sending in your GOOD NEWS to share, until the next time ... take care.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
