GOOD NEWS - 24th September

Updated: 1 day ago

A once-tired storage room in the colonnade, Marine Hall has been transformed into a fully equipped bike repair workshop, thanks to £22,000 of funding from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The refurbishment included the installation of secure shutters, new workbenches, storage units, and a full suite of tools, creating a safe, organised, and welcoming space for volunteers to carry out vital repairs. Now open twice a week, the workshop is run by a dedicated team of local volunteers who repair donated bicycles and distribute them to individuals in need across Wyre. A simple bicycle can be a lifeline, providing a means of transport to work or school, supporting physical and mental health, and offering independence and mobility.

Tony, one of the volunteers, says, “I really enjoy volunteering at the bike repair workshop in Fleetwood. The bikes come to us second-hand from the local community, and we repair them so they can be donated to people who really need them. Some use them for exercise or mobility, others to get to job interviews or to work, and for children it can mean having a bike when their family couldn’t otherwise afford one.

It's the last few days to vote in the Coastal Radio Local Hero Awards 2025.

Categories include Volunteer, Carer, Young Achiever and Charity of the Year as well as Sporting Hero, Charitable Event, Animal Champion, Community Champion and a Local Hero for Wyre. Nominees will be shortlisted and the winners announced at a gala dinner event in October at The Grand Hotel Blackpool.

Larkholme Primary School has launched a new book-lending library.

There's a range of titles available for children and adults, some are also free to go to a good home AND donations of books in good condition are appreciated. Pop along on Thursday afternoons between 3.30pm and 4pm to see what you can find to start a new reading adventure!

Congratulations all round this week at Fleetwood Cricket Club!

Despite a wash out of their last game of the season, the Second XI were crowned 2025 Champions of Northern Pyramid Division Two.

A proud afternoon at the Broadwater ground as the Club celebrated another successful season for the junior section at the annual presentation and young player Matilda has been starring in the BBC's 'Field of Dreams' with Freddie Flintoff.

Men's Shed Fleetwood support the local community in so many ways, usually without any fuss or fanfare.

This week they received a fantastic donation of £700 from Wyre Lodge Freemasons of The Bull pub in Poulton towards the weekly Veterans Breakfast.

They say, "Massive thank you. Amazing donation from amazing people. Forever indebted, God bless to all involved."

Men's Shed are also among the many community groups proud to support Fleetwood's Remembrance Service.

It was looking like this year's event would not include a marching band but of course the community has rallied round. As we write, the first practice session to form a band is about to start, and there's an invitation to join future sessions, held at the Fleetwood Cons Club.

Hopefully we still have plenty of beautiful Autumn days to look forward to but with the change in temperatures, it's also time to think about Winter.

Many local venues support the community by opening as Warm Spaces for people to enjoy a brew, maybe a snack and activities with others during cold months.

Any businesses, voluntary groups, churches planning to offer support are invited to send the details through to Healthier Fleetwood. We will be compiling these for a printed leaflet and to share online, supported by Wyre Council.

If you are considering opening as a Warm Space, Lancashire County Council's grant scheme is now accepting applications.

This has been set up for local organisations and groups within the voluntary, community, and faith sector, as well as for parish and town councils, to support the creation and improvement of warm and welcoming spaces for residents, focussing on those in need.

Applicants can apply for up to £750.

The first round of the grant scheme will run until Sunday 19 October 2025. Decisions will be made within 14-days from the date of application closure.

The topics covered in the questionnaire were living in Wyre, communications, pride in place & community safety, and health & wellbeing.

At the Open Meeting a member of the Community Team from Wyre Council will be share a survey report that is relevant for the Fleetwood area ... and everyone is invited to discuss some of the responses given - do you agree or disagree with them?

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
