GOOD NEWS - 1st October

Updated: Oct 14

There was some fabulous news announced last week ... Pharos and Mount wards in Fleetwood have been awarded £20 million over the next decade as part of the Government’s Pride in Place Programme.

The town will receive £2 million every year for the next 10 years, thanks to the efforts of Blackpool North & Fleetwood MP, Lorraine Beavers and her team.

Lorraine says, "Since I was elected, I have been fighting hard to ensure we have the investment we need and deserve in Blackpool North and Fleetwood. I am so proud that the hard work of my team and I is now paying off.

It will be up to local people how this money is spent. This is our chance to work together and decide how this money is invested in our area. I’ll be consulting with my community throughout and that starts right now.

I want to make sure that everyone who wants to be involved feels heard. I’m planning to use surveys, meetings, and focus groups already but I want to know what else I can do to reach my community.

For too long the people of Fleetwood have suffered the consequences of underinvestment. I have watched our community climb the league tables no one wants to top. We rank in the worst 10% for health, education, jobs, inequalities, & much more. I have watched as industry has moved away and well paid, reliable employment have become scarce. I’ve seen the consequences of this first hand, and I know how much it has hurt our community.

I believe that our community knows how to heal itself. I know how hard so many people are working to rebuild our town, and this money is our chance to show what we can do. This is our chance to fight back and invest in our people and community.

I have seen deprivation spread across the whole of Fleetwood and into Thornton and Cleveleys. I hope that by addressing the issues in Fleetwood Town Centre, the rest of my constituency can also prosper. We are one community and when things improve for one, they improve for us all."

Did you follow the thrilling Ryder Cup golf last weekend and did you know that Fleetwood voices were among those cheering on the Europeans?

The team at Mini Links Golf Fleetwood went out to New York, proudly wearing their Cod Army colours and have been inspired by what they experienced to open their very own Black Course.

You can now take on this new challenge as well as the existing 8-hole course and putting green on Central Promenade.

There's been a great reaction during the Summer to this new attraction for Fleetwood and there's some exciting news to be announced about plans for the October half-term and Halloween!

It's that time of year when coughs and sneezes seem to be more common ...

... and there's a series of FREE drop-in flu clinics coming up across Fleetwood.

The first is on Sunday 5th October from 10am to 4pm at Fleetwood High School.

Other dates and places are:

  • Fleetwood High again on Sunday 19th.

  • Affinity Lancashire on Saturday 11th, Thursday 16th, Saturday 25th.

All sessions, 10am - 4pm, just turn up.

Volunteers are needed for an exciting new project this winter which will support many low income families and those of no fixed abode in Fleetwood.

Whether you can give a couple of hours a week, or just now and then, your time will make a huge difference for families in our community. In return, you will be offered a free qualification in food hygiene and valuable employability skills.

The project will run from November to March over two nights a week in Fleetwood. Interested? Send an email to courtney@blackpoolvolunteers.org.uk

Great partnership work by the pupils and staff at Larkholme Primary School, and Fleetwood Town Community Trust.

The School say, "Well done to the members of Eco Club who worked with Fylde Coast Veterans to tidy up and maintain our memorial garden. We weeded, planted bulbs and collected seeds. During the winter we will be using our polytunnel to grow plants ready to plant out in the spring, hopefully from some of the seeds we collected today."

There's still a few places left on the FREE Guided Sketch Tours of the Fleetwood hospital building, Friday 3rd October.

Join local creative artist Joseph Travis for a look round the yet-to-be developed upper floors, take in some amazing views across to Knott End and further, and enjoy putting down what you see on paper.

It's not about how good an artist you are, just about taking part in a fun and unique, creative opportunity.

Sessions of around 90 minutes are at 11am and 1pm, and you will need to access stairs for the tour - the workshop is accessible to all.

> Places can be booked by email to thehubfleetwood@gmail.com

There was a fantastic morning of fundraising in and around Fleetwood last Friday for Macmillan Cancer.

The coffee mornings, cake bakes, raffles and tombolas at North Euston Hotel, Fleetwood Methodist Church, Peggy Lou Homeware, Armed Forces Veterans Garden, and The Heart of The Hub Cafe collected in well over £1,000 towards the charity's wonderful work.

Lucie, one of the amazing volunteers with One Fylde got involved ... selling her beautifully hand-painted stones.

Broadway Baby Bank is also celebrating a successful event .. to mark the first anniversary of the service.

Staff at the surgery organised a coffee morning and raffle, collecting over £370.

They say, "All the staff here at Broadway want to say a huge thankyou to everyone for their ongoing support. We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to the fundraiser."

For the start of a new month we have printed What's On guides for October at Fleetwood Library and Wyre's Great Outdoors.

Call in to the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays: 10am to 2pm to pick up a copy and browse the posters and leaflets for well over 100 other community groups and events.

There's been a fantastic Summer of community events to enjoy and thankfully the weather was glorious for Sunday's inaugural Fleetwood Donkey Derby.

Residents, businesses and community organisations came together to race along the Esplanade supported by hundreds of spectators, all enjoying the sunshine and the fun!

Congratulations to Tom from Volunteer Centre Wyre who was first over the line in the Winners Race and also to Connor of The Boathouse Youth, the first ever Fleetwood Grand National champion!

This free, family event really showed the strength of the community and everyone is looking forward to The Donkey Derby being an annual part of the Fleetwood calendar.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
