Updated: Oct 14

It's the Heritage Open Days weekend on Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st September and many of Fleetwood's historic and much loved venues will be opening their doors to welcome visitors.

Among the highlights is a chance to call in to Rossall Observation Tower, enjoy the stunning views across Morecambe Bay and meet the team of volunteers from Coastwatch Fleetwood. Open on both days between 10am and 4pm you can find out more about their work and support their fundraising.

There's also opportunities to see inside The Lower Lighthouse, Masonic Hall and St Mary's Church. The Mount Pavilion will be open - get a close up look at the clock mechanism and stand on the balcony.

There's guided walks around Euston Gardens on both days and an illustrated talk about the North Euston on Sunday.

The Esplanade will be closed between The Mount Pavilion and the corner of Promenade Road (Mount p.h.) for this family-friendly event. There's 4 heats with the winners going on to a Final plus The Grand National for all the racers.

There's also activities and stalls across the road in Marine Hall gardens, delicious food options and live music. The organisers say, that they will go ahead even if there's rain but just in case of a course inspection on the day ...

Want to get involved ... you could become the Fleetwood Donkey Derby Champion!

Spaces are available for more community organisations to take part. You only need 1 person to represent you on the day - in a maximum of 3 short races. Adults only (at least 16 years of age) and at least 5ft 6 inch height to comfortably wear the costume.

The Fleetwood Donkey Derby is supported by funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, in association with Wyre Council. The organisers are the newly-formed Fleetwood Arts CIC, made up of community organisations and event committees. They will support upcoming events and creative projects in Fleetwood by applying for funding, hosting and promotion. More information about Fleetwood Arts CIC will be shared soon.

The process for finding a new operator for Fleetwood's Leisure Centre and other facilities across the Borough has been announced.

Wyre Council is preparing for a smooth transition in the management of its leisure centres in Fleetwood, Garstang, Poulton, and Thornton, as part of its commitment to delivering high-quality, value-for-money services for residents. The current contract for operating these facilities, held by YMCA Fylde Coast since 2006, will conclude on 31 March 2026.

A statement from Wyre Council says, "Over the past 20 years, the YMCA has played a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our communities, and Wyre Council wishes to express its sincere gratitude for their dedication, professionalism, and the positive impact they have made across the borough. YMCA has delivered thousands of swimming lessons, hosted hundreds of community events, and supported countless residents in improving their health and wellbeing."

The procurement process began with the publication of contract requirements to the leisure sector in late 2024 and a rigorous competitive tendering process has followed. Following a review of these requirements, the YMCA confirmed that it would not be submitting a bid for the new contract.

The Council is currently evaluating bids from prospective operators, with the successful provider expected to be announced in December 2025.

Our best wishes to the riders taking part in the North West Blood Bikes convoy on Saturday 20th.

They will set off from The Strand, Larkholme at 11am and make their way to Affinity Lancashire Outlet where you can meet the riders and make a donation to their life-saving work.

There's a fantastic exhibition on now at Fleetwood Library showcasing work by North Fylde Photographic Society.

You can see all the terrific images upstairs at the Library on North Albert Street (there is a lift) until the last weekend of October.

Bikes of a different sort for Tony from Fleetwood Town Community Trust ...

... as he joins those aiming to raise £1,500 for Armed Forces Veterans activities in a 24-hour 'spinathon'. It's at the Veterans Gardens, Thornton from 9am on 10th October. Support on the day and donations are very welcome!

PC Jo and PCSO Katie started the 6-week mini police cadets programme in Fleetwood this week. Each cadet was issued with their uniform consisting of a police hat and pocket notebook, they tested their knowledge with a picture quiz and used the phonetic alphabet to write their names. Over 6 weeks the mini police cadets will have several inputs including Crime Scene Investigation, Fitness Test and First Aid.

Everyone had a great time at the Charity Concert in St Nicks Church last Saturday afternoon.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
