GOOD NEWS - 16th April

Updated: 7 hours ago

We shouldn't really be surprised anymore about the many ways the Fleetwood community comes together to support those in need and make a difference to people's lives ... and this week's Good News has several fantastic examples.

Luke organised the first Ron's Run in memory of his late father and there's now a series of events supporting good causes in the community. Fleetwood's Ron's Run is on 13th June ... you can run, jog, walk or push the 2k or 5k course along the Prom. The 'entry fee' is a donation of food items which will be passed on to Fleetwood's Pantry foodbank.

Open to all ages, children accompanied by an adult, you can enter the event on the day or pre-register online here

Ron's Run is supported by the Wyre Moving More programme and earlier this week Luke also collected donations from children and young people attending Wyre's Holiday Clubs, following their own mini-events.

Thank you to Eli from Wyre Youth Council for updating us about a couple of their community-focused campaigns.

They are currently collecting donations of new/hardly worn footwear: shoes, socks, trainers to be passed on to young people and families in need. They have already received some items including a kind donation from the ladies at The Chill Lounge. This follows the success of the recent hygiene product poverty appeal with hampers now being distributed to community venues across Fleetwood and further afield. Great work by all the young people and the supporting agencies!

If you'd like to know more about these appeals and how to get involved follow the Wyre Youth Zone on Facebook or contact us at Healthier Fleetwood and we can put you in touch with the group.

The team from Wyre Volunteer Centre have been hosting a Warm Clothing Hub over the Winter months and say, "Thank you to everyone who donated - we were overwhelmed by your kindness!"

Last week local businessman JJ from Evolution Ltd joined Jules at Fitness 50 for the cancer and debilitating conditions rehab course.

Thanks to JJ's amazing, kind donation and the ongoing support of Fleetwood Town Community Trust, the courses are now financially secure until the end of 2026 and will make a massive difference to the lives of people taking part and their families.

And to help deliver their wide range of groups, activities and wellbeing support, Fleetwood Town Community Trust has a number of employment opportunities ...

These include ...

  • Community Cohesion Coach

  • Sports Tutor

  • Secondary School Coordinator

You'll be joining a team passionate about bringing communities together and inspiring people of all ages to become healthier and happier.

If you are cheering on Fleetwood Town against their North West rivals Barrow on Good Friday, look out for the local team from Macmillan Cancer Support.

Fleetwood Town and Barrow are among the many Football League Clubs working with Macmillan and other partners to raise awareness of cancer, and deliver rehabilitation programmes. During the warm-up the players of both sides will wear special tops and staff from Macmillan will be at the game to distribute information on the support available for a variety of conditions including Prostate and Testicular Cancer.

Fylde Coast Macmillan Cancer Support is based at The HUB Fleetwood in the former hospital building, Bold Street. Usually open to visitors Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm, call 01253 955710 or email bfwh.macmillan.info@nhs.net for more information.

The King's Trust is recruiting for people aged between 16 and 25 who want to learn new skills, make friends and get involved in the local community.

The next 12-week course based at Fleetwood Fire Station is starting on Monday 19th May for young people not currently in education or employment. Supported by experienced staff from Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service, the group will work together on a series of interesting, fun projects, building self-confidence and resilience for the future.

Although the glorious daytime weather of last week seems to have left us, the clear night skies are great for a little star gazing.

Did you know that Fleetwood has its very own Astronomy Centre? It's actually within the grounds of Rossall School, headed up by Dr Nick Lister and he's hosting a series of talks over the next 3 months. Nick says ... "Discover the absolute wonder of the Universe, and the latest revelations about 21st-century Astronomy and Space. Probe the depths of nature and travel through time to unravel the enigma of life and why the fate of humanity lies out there."

  • Darkness Falls on Monday 28th April

  • Moon Watcher on Monday 19th May

  • Star Trek: Fact or Fiction? on Monday 23rd June?

There is a fee for these fascinating talks but it's not astronomical at just £10pp per evening or all 3 for £25 when booked together.

Congratulations to Fleetwood-based business Archway Travel ...

... enjoying success at last weekend's UK Coach Rally held in Blackpool, the national championships for the bus and coach industry.

After an excellent drive on Saturday, they made it through to the finals on Sunday, picking up two top prizes - the Peter Bostock Trophy for Best Driving Challenge and the Alan Goodwin Trophy for the Highest Placed Operator in all Classes. Archway said, "Massive thank you to all our staff here at Team Archway who have helped get the coach up to scratch after endless hours of polishing, it's been a long couple of weeks and there have been some very busy days but it's all worthwhile when we get some silverware."

Archway Travel Ltd operate several services to and from Fleetwood, helping to keep residents connected to each other and destinations across the Fylde Coast.

Well done to all the organisers and Jean at the venue for pulling everything together so quickly.
