GOOD NEWS - 15th October

We start this week with some important tech news and where to find help.

The ending of support for Windows 10 software means many people are buying new equipment running on Windows 11 but how do you dispose of the old machines, and the information they contain, safely. Just ‘deleting’ the files doesn’t actually get rid of them, it merely hides them so your important information: banking details; passwords; addresses; accounts and correspondence can still be ‘read’ by those who know how.

West Fleetwood Computer Clinic operated for 11 years before closing in January. The team of volunteers have vast experience of computing repairs and they can help ensure your data is unrecoverable.

For a limited time, machines which are ready for final disposal can be dropped off at Healthier Fleetwood in The HUB and the Care For Cleveleys shop. When you leave your equipment, you will be asked to fill in and sign a form agreeing to the work being carried out. It's free, guaranteed and reliable however, please be aware this is not a repair and return service.

Dave from the West Fleetwood Computer Clinic is a busy man!

A volunteer for Healthier Fleetwood, he's also hosting a Cyber Safety session at Fleetwood Library, from 3pm to 4pm on Thursday 23rd October.

During the presentation you will learn about the basics of online awareness and changes you need to make to be more secure. Whether it's passwords, cookies, ransomware or social media, Dave will be happy to take your questions too. Free to attend, just turn up on the day.

Managing our finances online is commonplace these days but it's not for everyone ... good to hear Fleetwood's Banking Hub has a new, permanent home.

The Banking Hub is now at 165 Lord Street, close to Herons Food. Opening hours are from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Transactions available at the counter include: withdraw cash (notes and coin), deposit cash (notes and coin), deposit cheques, pay utility bills, check account balance, collect change (for registered business customers).

A community banker is available ...

  • Monday for Santander

  • Tuesday for Barclays

  • Wednesdays for Halifax

  • Thursdays for Nat West

  • There's not a community banker available on Fridays

There are many themes within the NHS 10 Year Plan and feedback from the public will help shape the delivery of services.

The Royal National Institute for the Blind is encouraging anyone with experience of using community eye care services such as opticians to share their thoughts. If this is of interest to you or a family member please take a few minutes to visit ...

Locally there is a monthly peer support group for blind and partially sighted, and their families at The North Euston Hotel. The next meeting is on Tuesday 21st October, 11am.

> For more info contact n-vision on 01253 362 696 or email info@nvision-nw.co.uk

Are you looking for a volunteering opportunity in the local community? The Volunteer Centre Wyre team would love to meet you.

There's a drop-in session coming up to learn more about The Welcome Table, a new community project for people of no fixed abode and low-income families.

It's on Thursday 30th October from 12noon in The Heart of the Hub cafe. Register as a volunteer and also learn more about gaining qualifications useful for future work prospects.

And have a look in the stair cupboard, the garage, under the bed ... do you have any spare board games gathering dust?

Complete and in good condition games will be great for the new group. Please leave them with the Volunteer Centre in The HUB on North Albert Street, next door to The Pantry Foodbank.

If you can't make the drop-off or want any other information about Welcome Table, email FYH@blackpoolvolunteers.org.uk or telephone 07483 041028

Also new for our town ... The Fleetwood Front: Walk to Run Group.

This is a free and inclusive six month programme open to anyone and all abilities, taking you from walking pace to running a 5k, 10k maybe even a half-marathon! Starting on 29th October, sessions will be on Wednesday evenings between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, along the Esplanade to and from Marine Hall.

Although not exclusively for Veterans, Armed Forces personnel are encouraged to join the group, to support their physical and mental wellbeing. Whether you are a beginner, a returning runner or a veteran looking to reconnect, this is your chance to get moving, meet old and new friends, and achieve something great together.

Looking ahead ... some fantastic news about Fleetwood Moves Dance Festival!

Organisers LPM Dance have reached their fundraising target for the 2026 event. They say, "Thank you so much for all you have done to help us reach our goal. We really do appreciate all the support, and we can't wait to update you as the planning gets underway!"

Fleetwood Moves is supported by the Fleetwood Arts, Heritage & Culture Partnership, a working group of Future Fleetwood. More information about getting involved in the Partnership and a community event will be shared soon.

A little sooner, Fleetwood Town Council have confirmed the Firework Extravaganza is back with a bang this year on Wednesday 5th November!

Join your friends and family at Marine Hall Gardens with a DJ and entertainment from 5.15pm and the display starting 6.30pm. A variety of food vendors will also be attending the event offering tasty treats.

Just a reminder ... we've put back the date of the Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting to Wednesday 12th November to avoid a clash with the Bonfire Night events. As well as all the usual Good News from community groups and upcoming events, we have some guest speakers with details of new opportunities for the local residents.

FOCUS ON ... Fleetwood Neighbourhood Police

And staying on topic ... Fleetwood Neighbourhood Police team recently visited Fleetwood High School to chat with Year 10 students about Anti-social behaviour on Bonfire Night, and the impact it has on the emergency services and communities.

This is just one of many initiatives the team undertake to share updates on their work and to listen to the thoughts and suggestions of local residents, of all ages. Working with Regenda Homes, there's a hub on Hatfield Avenue, somewhere for the police and their partner agencies to engage with the community.

'Coffee with a Copper' is a chance to chat with an officer face-to-face, hear more about what's happening and perhaps share any concerns. The sessions take place monthly at several venues - there's one at Larkholme Community Centre on Thursday 23rd October.

PCSO Lizzy joins the Empower-Her girls group on Monday evenings as a trusted friend, offering advice and support. Her work was recognised with the Emergency Services Award at last week's Coastal Radio Local Heroes presentation.

The team attend as many community events as possible, you might even have seen one taking part in last month's Fleetwood Donkey Derby!

It's all part of getting out and about and connecting with the community.

Thank you to the Fleetwood Neighbourhood Police team and all their colleagues for your work and support in the community.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
