GOOD NEWS - 13th March

In last week's GOOD NEWS we mentioned how the wonderful volunteers from Fleetwood In Bloom are making the Town look so colourful, in this edition we swap planting flowers for something more edible!

The Salvation Army has produced a terrific, FREE 'Get Growing' guide designed for anyone wanting to try a new hobby or for more experienced gardeners looking to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Among the information is a really useful calendar for the year - when to sow, harvest etc. and lots of great tips to get you started. The guide also includes mention of a locally-based group with green fingers. You can read a little about the experience of residents at George Williams House in Fleetwood who were supported by staff from the Salvation Army and also Fleetwood Town Community Trust.

A reminder of the Memorial Park Gardening Club held every Wednesday morning from 9.30am to 12 noon.

It's free to take part, no experience is necessary and no need to pre-book, meet at The Pavilion.

There's also a Community Gardening Event with Wyre Council at The Mount Gardens on Wednesday 3rd April.

You can help create upright structures of woody cuttings woven between vertical stakes - a perfect hideaway for birds such as Blackbirds, Robins, Wren and Dunnocks to nest and forage within. It's a great way to get outside, get active and meet new people. Meet by the lodges, Mount Road for 10am. The event is FREE to attend and suitable for all ages. Suitable footwear and clothing is required.

The Easter weekend isn't too far away now and bookings are open for Wyre's Holiday Activities and Food Programme.

Local activities and support includes sports & fitness sessions and meals hosted by a number of partners including YMCA Fylde Coast, McGann Boxing, Fleetwood Town Community Trust and Wyre Council.

FREE Places are usually for children already receiving free school meals but paid-for places may also be available.

We have printed copies of the guide in our Information Centre or see the Wyre Council website here for full details of eligibilty and how to book places on the Easter course.

There are several, seasonal events coming up, starting with ...

Fleetwood Methodist Church hosts a Spring Celebration, Saturday 16th March. Stalls with small businesses and crafters, raffle, tombola, kids activities and more. The event is on from 11am to 3pm.

Also on Saturday, The Chill Lounge is giving away FREE Easter eggs! Pop along to the former Barney's Bingo building, Poulton Road, 11am - 1pm to pick one up, kindly donated by the community.

It's National No Smoking Day and also the launch of a brand new Countywide support service.

Smokefree Lancashire offers a range of resources and advice to help you quit and can also suggest personalised plans.

> For more information on the service follow Smokefree Lancashire on Facebook and visit their website here.

Fleetwood Police are recruiting for new PCSOs to join the team.

It is an opportunity to support your local community, creating a safer place to live and work. If you can offer at least 16 hours per month and have a real passion for helping others, then this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

Volunteering opportunities are also available with Homestart, supporting parents and children in the community.

Roles can be for just a couple of hours a week but you WILL always make a huge difference to somebody's life. There's a drop-in event to find out more - Strive Cafe, Flakefleet Primary School, Thursday 21st March, 2pm - 4pm with a further event on 9th May.

And some more dates for your diary ...

Chat and have a brew with the team from Fleetwood Social Prescribers at our new Information Centre, Lord Street - tomorrow (14th March), 11am to 1pm.

On Friday 15th March, we welcome the West Fleetwood Computer Clinic for a free, drop-in advice session. It's from 11am to 1.30pm, no pre-booking required.

Places are still available for next week's Meet The Funders afternoon.

It's at the North Euston Hotel, 12 noon to 4pm on Wednesday 20th March hosted by the Community team from Wyre Council. Charities, voluntary groups and event organsiers can learn more about how and when to apply from the expert funders. FREE places, including lunch and refreshments, can be booked by sending an email to community@wyre.gov.uk - it is a maximum of 2 places per organisation.

Keep sending in your GOOD NEWS to share with the community, especially if you've not been included before ... we love hearing from you!

Until the next time, take care.
