Our bulletin this week begins with GOOD NEWS from the Fleetwood community as individuals and organisations are recognised for the positive difference they make to those around them.
Fleetwood resident, town councillor and armed forces champion Jimilai Kuruvakadua met and spoke with HM King Charles on Monday, during a Royal visit to Lancaster.
Jimi's address began, "Your Majesty, it is with great honour and deep humility that I speak not only as a veteran but now as a serving Town Councillor here in Lancashire.”
He added, "Fleetwood, in particular, has felt the warmth and strength of community spirit. Here, service and kindness are not just words, they are lived experiences. As a veteran Councillor, I’ve had the privilege of helping other Commonwealth veterans find new direction, access opportunities, and feel valued in their second chapter of life. Whether through support, signposting, or simply being present, we continue to serve, this time not in uniform, but in heart and action."
Jimi supports our community in so many other ways, from organising events like the VE80 Family Fun Day to taking part in regular street-cleans and gardening projects.
Thank you Jimi for your kindness and hard work.
Thank you also to Professor Bola Owalabi, director of healthcare inequalities for NHS England, and her colleagues from Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board for visiting Fleetwood on Tuesday.
They came to see for themselves the fantastic partnership happening in the Town supporting children and young people through the Thrive initiative. This brings together healthcare, education, local authority partners to offer effective and consistent support to the children and young people and to their families. The results have been remarkable - Thrive has been recognised with awards and is held up as an example of good practice.
The visitors called through Flakefleet Primary School, Larkholme Primary School and The HUB Fleetwood. Professor Owalabi said her work often included hearing about the many challenges that communities face so she wanted to come to Fleetwood to "celebrate what's good" and to hear "stories of hope". She also recommends Fleetwood to other communities as a model to follow and learn from.
Among those sharing their fantastic work with the visitors yesterday, were staff and volunteers from Westview Community Association.
Naomi and Lucy mentioned some of the many groups and activities they offer to children, young people and families. They also introduced Horateo, the Wyre Youth Mayor and active member of Westview. He spoke beautifully about how the Centre's warm and welcoming 'home from home' environment had supported him through tough times and now he wanted to be there for others.
Westview has begun taking donations to their School Uniform Bank.
Unwanted blazers, trousers, skirts, shirts, sports kit, shoes/trainers, bags/stationery in good condition can be dropped off at the Centre on Eden Avenue.
If you'd like to be part of the wonderful team at Westview, they are looking for trustees to join the board.
Roles vary and any time you can offer is greatly appreciated. To get involved ...
