GOOD NEWS - 10th September

Significant changes are being considered for how councils work across Lancashire - residents in Fleetwood and across the County are encouraged to share their views.

Right now, most of Lancashire operates under a two-tier system:

  • Lancashire County Council provides services like social care, special education needs, roads, and libraries.

  • District and borough councils manage things like bin collections, planning, housing, and leisure.

The Government wants to simplify this system by creating larger unitary councils to deliver all services in one area. This process is called Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).

For Wyre, this could mean merging with neighbouring councils to form a larger authority responsible for everything from waste collection and planning to education and social care.

A public survey is now live - your views will help shape the proposals that must be submitted to Government by 28 November 2025.

> You’ll see all the information and an online survey at www.wyre.gov.uk/LGR

The survey closes: 28 September 2025

Help is available at libraries in Poulton, Garstang & Fleetwood. Paper and accessible formats available via lgr@lancashire.gov.uk or 0300 123 6701

It's been the first full week of a new term and there's so many lovely photos and stories coming out of the local Primary and High Schools ... here's just one for now.

Lucy's Garden at Larkholme School, originally opened in February 2023, in memory of a much-loved pupil has been renovated and is looking fantastic.

The school say, "Over the summer holidays we had some very generous volunteers who have helped to brighten up Lucy’s Garden.

We wanted to say a huge Larkholme 'thank you' to everyone who helped and donated their time and skills, and those who donated equipment and resources.

An especially big thank you to David Melia and Lucy’s Grandad, David also repointed the slabs in our planter area and whipped up an extra wood store for us."

Wyre’s first water bottle refill station has been installed on Fleetwood promenade!

This is now in place outside the DANFO toilets near Marine Hall, close to Fleetwood’s popular promenade and beachfront. The location was carefully chosen for its proximity to Fleetwood Leisure Centre, the course for the weekly parkrun and a range of sporting and charity events throughout the year.

It’s a high-footfall area where the impact of a refill station will be felt immediately.

This project follows a successful bid to the Sea-Changers Coastal Fountain Fund, which supports the installation of water fountains in busy or environmentally important coastal areas. The fund aims to reduce the impact of single-use plastic water bottles on coastal habitats by enabling communities to provide sustainable alternatives.

Young people who have missed out on their Maths and English GCSE's can now join a new group in Fleetwood.

Beginning on Thursday 11th September and running weekly this is an opportunity for 16 - 19 year olds to gain qualifications, learn skills, boost self-confidence and improve prospects. Sessions will be 1pm to 3pm within the Blackpool & Fylde College rooms at The HUB Fleetwood.

There's no set start date, you can learn at your pace and the course is open to all, not just Fleetwood residents.

> If you or somebody you know would like to find out more please email:

fyh@blackpoolvolunteers.org.uk or telephone 07483 041028.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in and won medals at the recent Fylde Coast Pan-Disability Games in Blackpool.

Volunteers and members of Fleetwood Town Community Trust, One Fylde and Together We Can Do were among the hundreds having fun on the day.

Sports included boccia, bowls, football and netball plus a chance to learn some wrestling holds and throws ... clearly that proved to be very popular!

Fleetwood Town Community Trust has partnered with Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs to help even more fans have the chance to lead Town out at Highbury.

Mascots who want to be part of the matchday experience but need help onto the pitch can now use one of the specially designed chairs. These have large, pneumatic tyres that displace the weight and won't damage the playing surface.

If you'd like to know more about this wonderful opportunity, please email

Fleetwood Trust, owners of The HUB, invite the community to be part of an unique, creative project based in the Town's hospital building ... Opening Doors.

Led by local artist Joseph Travis, the sessions will gather memories and stories, and also produce some new pieces of work for a display and possibly publications.

Did you or a family member work at the Hospital, do you remember the building as a patient or a visitor?

Drop in to chat with Joseph on Friday 26th September anytime between 10am and 3pm. You can give your comments in writing or recorded as audio. They will be collated and shared to the community across a range of media channels. There's no need to book, all welcome.

On Friday 3rd October, there's two special guided tours of the unseen, upper floors followed by a sketch workshop with Joseph at 11am and 1pm. These sessions must be pre-booked, places are limited and it is for ages 18 plus only.

It's not about how good an artist you are, more about the connection and affection you have for the Fleetwood hospital building.

> If you are interested in the sketch tours please email thehubfleetwood@gmail.com
