Last week Sunny and I had the pleasure of going to Westview Community Centre.
Probably like most of you, we had seen the various posts about food that had been donated to the Centre by Marks & Spencer. We were curious as to why this was happening and went along to speak with Naomi (manager of the Community Centre) and Lucy who runs various groups within the centre, many of them youth-based.
Marks & Spencer were already offering ‘excess’ food to Westview, these donations were usually sent on to The Pantry, foodbank in Fleetwood. However, due to the extraordinary large volumes recently a decision was made to offer the food direct to local residents, promoted via Westview’s Facebook page. The Lions of Fleetwood and Cleveleys played their part by transporting all the food donations from the Marks & Spencer store in Cleveleys to Westview Community Centre in Fleetwood.
I must stress that this donation is not guaranteed to be available every night, with this in mind the Community Centre would prefer it if people waited to be contacted or for a post to be published on their Facebook page rather than wait at the centre, especially as they have a lot of young people in the centre most evenings.
The centre has also run a weekly Food Club on Wednesdays for many years, working to reduce food waste. It started as an initiative to help those in need, although anyone can ask to join the club by simply completing the relevant form and paying £4 (cash) each week. The food bags consist of a variety of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, ready meals and sweet stuff. Whilst the contents vary each and every week with no guarantee of what’s included the contents of your bag will be worth much more than £4.
If someone is unable to pay the £4, I would encourage them to go and speak to a member of staff or a volunteer in the centre, as they may be able to set up a payment scheme that suits everyone regardless of their personal circumstances. The centre acknowledges they cannot help everyone but they really are trying to support as many people as they can, in a variety of way.
If you want to know more about what Westview Community Centre does, call into the centre on Eden Avenue to have a chat with them or check out their Facebook page.
Sunny and I really would like to thank Naomi and Lucy for making us feel so welcome and for all the work you do for the people of Fleetwood.
