Reece & Sunny's Roving Report - The Larkholme Wombles

Sunny and I have recently been going underground, overground wombling free on the Larkholme Shops precinct – sorry, I couldn’t resist the reference to a programme from my childhood.

The Larkholme Wombles was set up by Councillor Jayne Martin with the help of Fleetwood in Bloom, Fleetwood in Flower and Suzanne Davenport to see if the residents of Larkholme would be interested in helping look after their estate.

Once a month there is an organised session, where a team of volunteers get together and clean the precinct of rubbish, keep on top of the weeds and planters, giving the residents of Larkholme a chance to take some pride in the area they live in.

Moving forward Jayne is hoping to set up similar groups throughout Fleetwood, this initiative is funded by Fleetwood Town Council however, it can’t be done without the volunteers and people of the town giving some of their time freely. Local residents also organised a fundraiser through the Larkholme Chat page on Facebook to support the cost of a new bench at Larkholme.

The next area Jayne would like to possibly start up is the Broadwater Estate, if this is something you would like to get involved with please contact the Fleetwood in Flower team and show everyone how beautiful our little town could be.

Sunny and I enjoyed meeting some of the Larkholme Wombles, who had this to say about the group:

Suzanne joined to help make the precinct nice and tidy which she feels is important as a lot of the community visit the precinct area on a regular basis, it is nice for everyone to see the area being well maintained.

Suzanne through her group Larkholme Chat on Facebook has done a lot of fundraising enabling the purchase of a bench for people to rest for a while, if needed, or just take time to enjoy their surroundings.

Angie comes along because she sees it as her way of helping her community and it keeps the area clean and tidy.

Sunny and I really enjoyed out visit to meet the Larkholme Wombles, we were surprised at the amount of litter in such a small area even though there are litter bins with ashtrays within the area. I accept, that some of the litter may have blown out of the bins but if we all took that extra bit of care with our litter it would help make a difference to how an area may look overall.

I will look forward to seeing more of these local groups popping up around town, they really are fun, everyone is so friendly and it’s a great way of meeting new people who live in your area of Fleetwood.

If you are interested in releasing your inner womble within your local area please get in touch with Fleetwood in Flower, I am sure they will assist you in setting up a group in your area.

Next meetings of the Larkholme Wombles: Tuesday 11th March and Tuesday 8th April between 11am and 12pm
