HEALTHIER FLEETWOOD OPEN MEETING - 5th August 2026

After a break in July, it was lovely to see everyone again at the Open Meeting and we were all looking forward to hearing everyone’s Good News.
Healthier Fleetwood will be helping to gather ideas and feedback on the projects and events funded by the UK Government ‘Pride in Place’ programme. Pride in Fleetwood will receive £2m of funding a year for 10 years and a neighbourhood board has been set to manage this ensuring that the community is involved at all stages of the decision-making process.
Board members Ruth and John are on the working group looking at ideas to refresh and regenerate Lord Street – attracting more businesses to open and more visitors to support them. Ruth said that repairing and repainting the shop-front shutters would improve the first impressions, there were conversations about incentives for business rates and of course there needs to be a speedy but safe plan for the fire-damaged property that was disrupting transport links to the North end of the Town.
Ruth and John invited the meeting to view a display of ‘ideas for discussion’ and share their thoughts. Chair of the Pride in Fleetwood board, Mark and Programme and Governance Officer, Andrea were also present … Mark stressing how nothing will happen without the community’s input and support.
Pauline thanked the team and suggested that conversations continue during the ‘tea break’ later in the evening. Other themes from Pride in Fleetwood will be part of future Healthier Fleetwood meetings.
Kate from Wyre Council started the ‘round the room’ updates with news of two opportunities. Care & Repair is a great service offering practical support for residents which could include fixing handrails, minor electrics carried out by approved tradespeople and volunteers.
Wyre’s befriending service continues to support isolated residents through volunteers keeping in touch by phone or meeting for a cuppa and a chat. More help is needed and it can be just an hour or two a month. Volunteers are matched with clients based on interests and location.

Wendy is one of the Fleetwood Social Prescribers and told us that £270 had been raised at the recent Colour Run in memory of the former colleague Lisa. The funds have been passed to KCA Cancer Support Group to help their work in the local community.
Sam is mental health nurse as Mount View Practice and attends the meetings when she can to catch up on what’s happening and offer any help she can.
Carole was representing Fleetwood Rotary this month. The Club have been busy working in the community, volunteering at events with their own projects including the successful ‘book hunt’ which had received many messages of thanks. Rotary meet monthly at the North Euston hotel for a meal and to share information … new members are very welcome!
Jamie was attending his first meeting and has been building up connections in Fleetwood and further afield. He’s working on a project to bring together the many services and support for mental health on a user-friendly platform. We look forward to hearing from Jamie about his progress.
Susan said numbers were down at Wyre Flounders adult swimming club. Several ‘regulars’ had left for a number of reasons and there were some concerns about the temperature of the pool. For those looking for a calm environment for swimming, please call Susan on 01253 522232.
Pauline thanked Susan, John and Elizabeth for all their help and support. John told us that the latest Bereavement Journey programme at Emmanuel Mount Church begins in September for anyone needing support following a loss.
Anne & John formed The Walnut Tree Wyre as a lived-experience, peer support group for people with dementia/Alzheimer's and for their family and carers. They host drop-in at The HUB Fleetwood on the last Friday of the month and have put together a really useful guide to the services and help available in the local community.
Margaret, chair of Fleetwood Civic Society reminded us of their monthly meeting … new members welcome. The Society is also co-ordinating local venues for the Heritage Open Days weekend in September.
Healthier Fleetwood and Lancashire Police volunteer Dave shared a tip for deterring scams and keeping your personal data safe – the Call 159 service. Dave advised, if you think you may have received a scam phone call regarding your banking "stop, hang up and call 159". You will only be asked one question, “Who do you bank with?”, no account or personal details need to be shared then you will be connected with your bank’s security team.

There was time for some conversation about how and where we can all share news of what’s on in the community - what works well and what doesn’t - before Anne read her poem for the month and Pauline invited everyone to carry on talking over a brew.
