GOOD NEWS EXTRA

Conversations from Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting, 2nd July

ree

As always we enjoyed an inspiring evening, sharing the best of Fleetwood!

Among the many speakers, we heard from Rachel about the formation of a new network across Wyre for the VCSFE Sector (Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise). There's a first meeting in person (in Poulton) and online on Tuesday 15th July at 1.30pm.

> To find out more contact Rachel on rachel.coupe@lacvs.org.uk and book places at https://www.trybooking.com/uk/EZTN

Kate from Wyre Council mentioned the FREE 12-week weight management course in partnership with Slimming World, for residents with an eligible BMI score. A 12-week gym pass with YMCA Fylde Coast is also included. Referrals can be made by a healthcare professional or by self-referral.

Wyre Council has also recently launched a new bicycle maintenance workshop at Marine Hall, open on Thursday mornings. The facility offers volunteering opportunities and a way for local residents to receive a refurbished bike to support their health and wellbeing.

June and her daughter let us know that St Nicholas’s Church is appointing a new Youth Pastor while John from Emmanuel Mount was looking forward to the Feast for The Nations event on Saturday 5th July.

Wendy is one of the Fleetwood Primary Care Network social prescribing link workers. The PCN is recruiting for somebody to join the team on a full or part-time basis.

Heather has set up the Ember and Blossom CIC to host community events and projects. She hopes to install signage at parks and open spaces to make them more inclusive for children and has contacted Wyre Council and the Play Inclusion Project for support. Additional help from language therapists is welcomed.

Heather has also joined the Fleetwood in Bloom team and is planning an art installation on the Promenade using decorated rocks.

Andrew reminded us of all the good work from the volunteers at Mens Shed Fleetwood including the veterans breakfast, Thursday lunch and their many groups. They are also supporting the Comic Con event and Tram Sunday on Sunday 20th July,

Shaz is helping to spread the word on events across Fleetwood and the County as a presenter on Inferno Radio and through a Facebook page. Inferno is offering some FREE ads to local businesses and groups.

Coach & Shine CIC was successful with a bid to the Eric Wright Fund which will support their work with children and families. Kelly hosts the Becoming More Me sessions at Strive Community Café (Flakefleet Primary School) and will be working with councils and other partners at the upcoming Holiday and Food (HAF) clubs during the Summer break. By listening to the community, Kelly’s work identifies and targets gaps in the current support.

Reece shared details of Fleetwood Rotary Club’s ‘Great Rotadoll Bookhunt’. Over the next 12 months, as part of the Club’s Centenary celebrations, look out for bags with books and knitted dolls left around Fleetwood ... if you find one, share a photo on your social media and enjoy your treats!

Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs continues to be a fantastic community asset, drawing visitors from all over the UK and further! They do need more volunteers to help their work, anything from an hour or two a month is really appreciated.

Reece is also a member of the Just Sing community choir based at Fleetwood Methodist Church and they had their first concert on 3rd July. New members are always welcome to join the friendly group who meet on Thursdays at 7pm to enjoy popular songs from stage, screen and the charts.

If any groups in the Fleetwood community would like Recce & Sunny to visit them for a ‘Roving Report’ please contact us by email to

Pat helps to run two groups … Young at Heart meet at Fleetwood Library on Tuesday mornings to enjoy conversation, activities and games. They also like to go on trips but at the moment don’t have use of transport … any offers of help are welcome. The Bereavement Group have recently moved to the YMCA Lofthouse Building, meeting every two weeks to offer support to anyone coping with a loss.

For info about the groups, email listening@healthierfleetwood.co.uk and we can put you in touch with Pat.

Lesley and her friends set up the KCA Cancer Support Group to offer their help and signposting to cancer patients and their families. They opened a new Fishing Lake and Remembrance Area near Bispham and raised around £1,500 which will be split between the group and a residential care home. KCA have more events coming up including a psychic night.

Our best wishes to Lesley for her upcoming wedding … we hope you, Robert, your family and friends have a wonderful day.

Janette attended on behalf of the Behind Closed Doors domestic violence support group. The volunteers have achieved a great deal in the 3 years since forming and the 4 months since the opening of their Hub. A detailed update is available on our website here.

The Wyre Flounders adult swimming club has a good membership at the moment, sometimes meaning the sessions can get a little busy. They meet on Saturdays, 5pm at YMCA pool.

Telephone Susan on 01253 522232 for more information

Susan also volunteers with the Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre MS Society and they will have a stall at Tram Sunday. Look out for the orange flag, say hello and find out more about what they do.

David thanked Emmanuel Church for their support and hospitality hosting the meetings. He updated on the opening hours for the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre at The HUB Fleetwood – the former hospital building. The centre is now open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 2pm, in preparation for the launch of the new community café.

One Fylde will operate the Heart of the Hub café as a volunteering opportunity for the adults they support and as somewhere for groups and organisations to share their work. The official opening day of the cafe is Tuesday 22nd July from 11am with speeches at 12noon … all welcome!

Before we broke for more chat and a brew, Anne read her latest poem.

Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting, those that contributed to the conversations and those that came along to listen.

The next meeting is from 6.30pm to around 8.30pm on Wednesday 6th August at Emmanuel Mount Church, Mount Road. We look forward to seeing you all.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
