GOOD NEWS - 8th July

  • 6 min read

Over the last week we have seen many examples of how the fantastic community-led partnership work in Fleetwood is so highly regarded across the Country.

Healthier Fleetwood was contacted recently by members of the Blackburn community - they wanted to know more about our journey and also to visit The HUB Fleetwood. The group included businesses, health and care professionals, charities and Blackburn residents involved in a number of projects and peer support groups. They were very impressed with what they saw and said they wanted their own 'hub' although perhaps not quite as big as the Fleetwood hospital building! Thank you to the individuals and groups who took time to meet with the group.

The Independent Commission on Neighbourhoods (ICON) has been created to review the state of England’s most deprived areas.

Chair of ICON, Baroness Hilary Armstrong and her colleagues met with residents and community leaders on Friday to hear more about plans from Pride in Fleetwood. After an informal conversation over coffee, and a joyous singalong performance by Harmony & Health, the party met with the Pride in Fleetwood board members. We understand the ICON group described Fleetwood as "the most connected community they have ever seen."

Fleetwood will receive £20 million through UK Government's Pride in Place programme over 10 years - see the Pride in Fleetwood website for more information

> If you read this bulletin in time, there's a 'Meet The Pride in Fleetwood Board' event this evening, Wednesday 8th July from 5.30pm at Emmanuel Mount Church.

Following publication of the wonderful article by Adam Lent for The King's Fund, a film crew was in Fleetwood this week to capture more of our community's story.

Many of the professionals and local residents involved in the projects and groups featured in the article were interviewed about their work and the positive changes they've seen. This included Liz from Thrive Partnership and some of the boccia players supported by Fleetwood Town Community Trust, shown in our header photo.

Thank you to Helen, Megan, Arun and Liam for coming up to Fleetwood. The film may be shared by The King's Fund at their event 'Putting people at the heart of health and care' on 15th July in London. Dr Mark Spencer is among the speakers on the day and we hope to be able to share the film soon after.

Community, creative and heritage partners have worked together to enter Fleetwood for consideration as the UK Town of Culture 2028.

The Fleetwood Arts Partnership have submitted 'Sea and Salt of the Earth’ exploring themes of water and working life, migration and connection, health and resilience and living at the edge of land and sea. This digital postcard has been added to the map of town's applying and the shortlist will be announced soon.

Local residents are playing their part in creating 'Harriet: Spirit of Fleetwood'

Harriet will be a huge puppet, operated by volunteers at community events for many years to come. Through a series of on-going workshops, led by artists Janine and Emma the costume is being designed and made using techniques including batiking, where wax is applied to fabric then painted over revealing the pattern.

And staying with the arts theme ... Fleetwood Museum have announced their FREE Summer Crafts for the holidays.

Separate one-hour sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11am and 1pm from later this month ...

In memory of her friend Lisa, a visitor to Fleetwood's accessible beach, Gillian has raised over £5,000 for the charity! This will be used to purchase a new chair, adding to the extensive range available, free of charge, from the Wheelbase by the Central Beach cafe and beach huts.

CYBER SECURITY TIPS ... 6

Lancashire Police and Healthier Fleetwood volunteer Dave Carlos shares advice regarding online safety.

Back-up your data ... you’ll be glad you did! A 'backup' is a copy of your data, stored in a separate place, in case something goes wrong with the original copy. Photos, documents and personal data kept on your devices should be backed up. Most devices have a backup system provided free on purchase, but you have to turn them on. Use the Cloud when you get the option, or USB sticks and external drives.

Next time ... What to do with suspicious messages

AND FINALLY ... with the World Cup continuing and England still involved, community partners supported an event this week raising awareness of an increase in domestic violence during major sporting events.

Healthier Fleetwood was pleased to join with Fleetwood Town Community Trust, Behind Closed Doors, Lancashire County Council and others at ASDA in Fleetwood to share information on support available to anyone affected by domestic violence and coercive behaviour.

We hope that everyone enjoys the football and England's progress ... hopefully all the way to the Final in eleven days time!

Keep sending in your GOOD NEWS to share with the Fleetwood community.

Until the next time, take care.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
