GOOD NEWS - 7th January 2026

Updated: 3 days ago

Hello ... we hope you all had a great Christmas and that 2026 has started well.

It's that time of year when many people make positive changes to their lifestyle or work pattern, and to embrace what the next 12 months brings. As always there's an abundance of opportunities across Fleetwood and we look forward to sharing these with you.

Let's start by wrapping up the Good News from the Festive period.

Thank you again to the many organisations, voluntary and faith groups, and caring individuals who gave up their time to help others over Christmas. The hot meals, coffee mornings, distribution of food and gift hampers will have made a huge difference.

The Christmas Day Dinner at Fleetwood Sea Cadet base was a fantastic success with nearly 200 local residents enjoying the meal and the good company. It was wonderful to see the event recognised in a special programme on TV over the holidays - organiser Heather from Ember & Blossom CIC invited down to Westminster Abbey to meet HRH Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Another Christmas Day lunch event at the MensShed Fleetwood welcomed around 25 guests and also the Level Up Fleetwood group opened up in the evening for brews, mince pies and some festive fun.

Thank you all.

It was announced just before Christmas that Professor Dr Mark Spencer will chair the Pride in Fleetwood funding panel.

Mark is of course the founder and an ambassador for Healthier Fleetwood, as well as chair of the Fleetwood Trust - owners and operators of The HUB Fleetwood, a working GP and involved in many other community initiatives. While this new position is independent of all those roles, Mark's CV makes him an ideal choice to bring together the many interested parties and share ideas for the £2m a year funding secured by Lorraine Beavers MP.

Applications to join the panel are now being invited. Board members must work or live in Fleetwood, prioritise community voices at all times and commit to attending a minimum of one board meeting per month.

Expressions of interest from young people, local parents, residents of the Pharos and Mount wards, and people with lived-experience of poverty, disability, and LGBTQIA+, are encouraged to get involved.

Mark & Lorraine say, "We want the board to represent the community of Fleetwood so specific details on time commitments & meetings will be developed by the board. We hope that this creates an inclusive board that truly represents the voice of Fleetwood's community."

Please send expressions of interest to lorraine.beavers.mp@parliament.uk (up to 400 words) by 10am, 19th January 2026.

For the New Year we're updating all the posters and leaflets available from the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre and also our website listings.

There's around 150 groups, activities and events on display so there's always something new to discover.

If your organisation, voluntary group or committee has recently created new artwork or changed your offer, please do pop in to see us or get in touch so we can share your Good News.

As much as we love to see you, the recent spell of cold weather and the challenge of slippery pathways does mean it might be better to stay at home some days.

If you are out and about there are several venues across the Fleetwood community opening as a 'Warm Space', somewhere for a hot drink, maybe a snack or a meal.

These include Fleetwood Library, Strive Cafe, Mens Shed, St Peter's Church and Westview Community Association. Days, times and the offer vary.

If you know of other Warm Spaces please contact us so we can update the info.

One of Fleetwood's successful community groups is having a makeover!

The Drop-In Memory Centre has been hosted for many years by volunteers from Fleetwood Rotary Club, a welcoming space for anyone with dementia and for their family and carers. Times change, the organisers have identified the group needs a refresh and it will now be know as The Thursday Club.

Fleetwood Rotary say, "We are now also inviting all those who have also lost someone and wish to share fellowship with those who have gone through the same experience or just want some company. Those living with dementia are still, of course, welcome with their carers so that we can all encourage and help each other through any difficult times we may be going through."

The Thursday Morning Club is in the Community Hall at Emmanuel Church, Mount Road every third Thursday of each month starting 15th January. Call in between 10am and 12noon.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them.
