GOOD NEWS - 5th February

Updated: Feb 17

A few weeks ago well over 100 people enjoyed a free Christmas Day Dinner thanks to Heather, her family and an amazing group of caring volunteers.

It wasn't just about serving a delicious festive meal, it was also creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, somewhere for people who may have been alone, to share the spirit of Christmas. For some time it's been Heather's dream to host similar community events throughout the year and her plans have taken a big step forward this week with the launch of Ember and Blossom CIC.

The new status for the group will allow them to apply for funding and work closely with other partners in the community on opportunities to combat isolation and build a brighter future for Fleetwood residents. We look forward to hearing more and supporting Heather and the team.

There's a new art group for adults starting this weekend at Fleetwood Library.

Local resident Joe contacted Healthier Fleetwood recently to say he'd like to support the community, with an opportunity for people to learn new skills or rediscover a talent and be inspired to become more creative. The first session of the Fleetwood Art Club will be on Saturday 8th February, 2pm to approximately 4pm on the 1st floor of the library. It's suggested that you attend for at least 4 weeks, as Joe and his friend Kaitlan will demonstrate different media including painting, sketching, collage, sculpture and more before repeating the themes. Open to ages 16 and over, the sessions are FREE to attend although we are asking that participants make a 'donation' each week of whatever they can.

Joe & Kaitlan are giving their time for free and Healthier Fleetwood is covering the cost of materials and equipment to get the group started. All funds raised will be used to maintain the group as long as possible, so as many residents can attend. We'd love to see people who think of themselves as absolute beginners and don't attend other craft groups. As it's a new group numbers may have to be limited but as we go forward we'll see if it's practical to attend by turning up on the day.

Pride & Place is a series of creative workshops and projects, taking Fleetwood's heritage, geography and sense of community as its inspiration.

Supported by artist Lisa, several local residents used sign writing as a means of expression and their work is being displayed in an exhibition at Fleetwood Market Gallery. The group explored the town to find traces of handmade signs: lettering on cast iron grids, mason's marks carved in stone, mosaic tiles and faded 'ghost' signage on shop fronts. During these adventures in 'sign-spotting' they explored the historic architecture and curious back streets, met people along the way to talk about ancient and modern myths, historic events and the unique personality of Fleetwood.

The Pride & Place: Sign Painting Exhibition is at Fleetwood Market Gallery from tomorrow until 29th March on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays, 9am to 4pm.

Fleetwood Market is celebrating ...

... with a 'Highly Commended' in this year's National Association of British Market Authorities awards. This recognises the role the market plays in the community through innovation and customer service. Congratulations to all the staff and traders.

Congratulations also to everyone who took part in the 'Veterans Walk for Wellbeing' last Saturday, covering 24 miles between Fleetwood and Morecambe.

Staff and volunteers from Fleetwood Town Community Trust and the Morecambe FC Community Foundation joined forces to raise awareness and funds for Armed Forces Veterans and their families. They arrived in time for kick-off at the EFL League Two game, although sadly it wasn't the Cod Army's day.

... and continuing the theme, tickets for this year's Garstang Walking Festival are on sale now.

Routes include a 7.5 mile walk around Fleetwood on Sunday 4th May, taking in the Nature Reserve, Promenade and Memorial Park

If you fancy some fresh air and getting your hands dirty, a new fortnightly gardening group has started in Fleetwood.

The first volunteering event was held at Eden Gardens, opposite Westview Community Association, earlier today. Don't worry if you've missed out, there's more dates coming up! Join in the fun and help to create a new community green hub for local residents to enjoy.

An update on our move to The Hub within the Fleetwood Hospital building.

Much of the 'heavy lifting' has been done now so it's about making our new space ready to welcome visitors. This move is very much with an eye to the future - when the Community Cafe and other facilities open, the Ground Floor will be close to completion and offering a range of support and opportunities for local residents.

To be ready to work with the existing and new partners on this exciting phase for The Hub, we are delighted to announce ... The Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre will open on Friday 14th February, Valentine's Day and we'd love to see you!

Call in any time between 10am and 2pm for a chat and to browse the many posters and leaflets on wellbeing groups, activities and events, in and around Fleetwood. We will then open every Friday at the same time during February and March, and will confirm additional days and hours as the other facilities open their doors. Further details of the new centre will be shared in next week's bulletin.

We also hope to see you at this evening's Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting from 6.30pm at Emmanuel Mount Church.

It's the first get-together of the year and we've heard from many residents and community groups who will be coming along to update us on their successes and plans. Everyone is welcome, it's very informal and friendly. Speak or just listen as you prefer, there's always something new to learn about and refreshments are available too. A full summary of the meeting will be shared as an extra bulletin over the weekend.

Keep sending in all your GOOD NEWS news to share with the community ...

... until the next time, take care.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
