GOOD NEWS - 28th January 2026

Updated: 2 days ago

Over the last week it's been wonderful to hear about ideas from individuals and community groups which will benefit local residents and visitors.

The most ambitious and game-changing is Fleetwood People's Pier CIC and their vision for a vibrant community and tourism offer on the site of the former promenade attraction. In just a few weeks they have become a constituted group, issued a possible layout for the space and are looking ahead to the next steps on their journey. Of course the plans may change as they progress but a group including Fleetwood legend, Jane Couch MBE, will certainly be up for the challenge!

Two Fleetwood-based organisations are offering activities and support to Veterans and the Armed Forces community.

Fleetwood Gym Amateur Boxing Club is partnering the England Boxing Veterans Project - a programme designed specifically for ex-service personnel. The Club is looking to run a FREE 8-week course aimed at veterans of all ages. They will offer a welcoming environment and support through boxing to improve fitness, boost wellbeing and mix with other former servicemen and women over a brew.

All equipment is provided and sessions will be led by fully qualified coaches.

If you or someone you know might be interested in joining the programme ...

... and MensShed Fleetwood has announced they are branching out to help form a new 'Vets Shed' for former and serving members of the armed forces. They say, "It will be totally run by veterans for veterans in a new building. We are just awaiting official documents then away we go!"

The common link to all three of these initiatives is members of the Fleetwood community stepping forward with their ideas, their time, their skills and their passion to make our Town a healthier, happier place for everyone ,,, something we wholeheartedly support.

We look forward to hearing what's next and wish them all every success for the future.

There's a new wellbeing group starting at Westview Community Association.

Hosted by staff from Fleetwood Town Community Trust, the 'Live Well' gentle exercise hub will help people enjoy more independence. The sessions include physical activity, building connections and encouraging the participants to continue what they learn in their own homes. Sessions are every Thursday from 1pm to 3pm at Westview, Eden Avenue FY7 8DH

Fleetwood residents are invited to share their suggestions for the Morecambe Bay area as part of the ‘Our Future Coast’ survey.

Michelle is one of the team at The Morecambe Bay Partnership, she says, "We'd love you to think far ahead, to 2050 and beyond, and hear about your concerns, priorities, hopes and aspirations for your local place and wider Bay area, along with thoughts about our Bay’s changing nature, climate, and coastline. The online survey will take around 5 - 7 minutes to complete online and will be open until the end of February"

There's an additional FREE health check clinic with Fylde Coast Medical Services and it's tomorrow in Fleetwood.

AND FINALLY ...

... it has been a while but the next Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting is almost here, it's on Wednesday 4th February from 6.30pm at Emmanuel Mount Church.

After the Christmas and New Year break the February meeting is always one of our busiest. It's an opportunity for local residents and community groups to share their Good News and be part of discussions on activities and events supporting health and wellbeing. The meetings have been central to Healthier Fleetwood's work for the last 10 years and now there's even more reason to come along, find out what's happening and get involved!

The monthly meetings will be one of the ways you can put forward your ideas to the 'Pride in Fleetwood' Funding Board.

To date, the Government has set out much of the pathway for each community to manage their funding - selecting a Chair and putting together a Board. Going forward it's for the Board to make recommendations on how they want to operate and communicate, and which projects will be supported by the funding.

So please join us at the Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting next Wednesday, be part of the conversation or just listen as you prefer - we will share more on Pride in Fleetwood as it's announced by the Board in the weeks ahead.

Until the next time, take care.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
