  • 4 min read

NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS WEEK is fast approaching and Healthier Fleetwood have teamed up with Fleetwood Rotary to host an event showcasing many of the opportunities to support your community through volunteering.

Local residents are invited to join us this Saturday, 30th May, from 11am - 2pm at Emmanuel Mount Church, Church Road for the Fleetwood Volunteers Fayre. You can chat over a brew with members of these groups and organisations active in Fleetwood:

  • Wyre Council

  • Fleetwood In Bloom

  • The Bay: A Blueprint for Recovery

  • NCI Fleetwood

  • Fleetwood Wombles

  • Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs

  • RBL Poppy Appeal (Fleetwood)

  • Wyre Scouts

  • Girl Guides

  • Behind Closed Doors

  • Onward Events, organisers of some of Fleetwood's biggest festivals and days out.

Some organisations can't attend on the day but do have volunteering opportunities and one-off events that need support. Browse the Healthier Fleetwood table and pick up a leaflet of what's available - please get in touch to display your group's details.

Members of Fleetwood Rotary Club will be 'meeting and greeting' on the day and sharing more about their work in the local community and further afield.

Fleetwood Volunteers Fayre is FREE to attend and there's no need to pre-book.

> For further information - please see the Facebook event here and you can also email listening@healthierfleetwood.co.uk with any questions about the event.

We'll be sharing more news about ways to volunteer all next week on the Healthier Fleetwood Facebook page and in person from our Information Centre at The HUB Fleetwood, Bold Street.

Volunteers are making a huge difference in the community whether it be through a regular activity or by taking on a challenge to raise funds for a good cause and this week there's several to acknowledge ...

Rachel Brindle, a science teacher at Cardinal Allen High School completed the London Marathon, and her sponsors have contributed an amazing £2,000 for Fleetwood's Pantry foodbank.

As we write, Luke Helmn is resting after the third of his 5 marathons in 5 days, supporting The Big Food project, before the Ron's Run event on Sunday 7th June, also for The Pantry Foodbank.

Over £600 was collected by the members of Fleetwood People's Pier last Saturday at a Tombola and Clothes Sale. The funds will go towards the group's plans for a new attraction on the Promenade site.

And a concert for RNLI Fleetwood was a hugely enjoyable evening thanks to, among others, the wonderful singers from Harmony & Health.

Jim Southern, chef at Heart of the Hub cafe is preparing for a Tough Mudder. He will be raising funds for One Fylde and their work supporting and empowering adults with learning difficulties.

All the board members of Pride in Fleetwood are volunteers, giving their time to support the community.

'Meet The Board' to find out why they want to help identify and guide the projects funded by the UK Government through the Pride in Place programme.

THIS WEEK'S CYBER TIP

Online safety is very important to your overall anxiety level. Lancashire Police and Healthier Fleetwood volunteer Dave Carlos shares advice ...

Save your passwords to your browser

All modern browsers (e.g. Chrome, Edge and Safari) offer to save your passwords, as you create them. The National Cyber Security Centre advise you to do this, it’s safe. It also means that you can create unique, strong passwords for all your accounts. You won’t need to remember them yourself, the browser does it for you. Don’t use the same password for all your accounts!

Next time ... what about 2-step verification?

AND FINALLY ...

Maybe it's the sunshine but this month seems to have flown by and our next Healthier Fleetwood meeting is only a week away.

We're back at Emmanuel Mount Church on Wednesday 3rd June for an evening of positivity, as community groups share updates on their work and we discuss ideas for something new. Doors at 6pm for 6.30pm start, come along to speak or to listen as you prefer. No need to book and of course, there's a brew available too. See you there!

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
