CONGRATULATIONS TO FLEETWOOD'S WALKING FOOTBALLERS
On Saturday 28th April we were delighted to be asked along to support the Fleetwood Town Flyers walking football club at the FA Peoples Cup Finals. The event took place at the impressive St George’s Park facility near Burton, training base for the England national team and many others.
The Flyers had reached the last stage of the competition by winning the North West area finals a few weeks earlier beating the teams from some pretty big clubs along the way.
After playing 5 group matches Fleetwood qualified for the semi-finals and then beat the pre-tournament favourites on penalties to make the final. By now the competition was being covered live by the BBC on the iPlayer red button and the Flyers won another penalty shoot-out to clinch the title of FA Peoples champions!
The reaction of the players and their management was wonderful to see and they thoroughly deserved their success for all their hard work and skill but walking football isn’t all about trophies and being a great players. It’s a fantastic way of keeping fit and active, especially for those with limited mobility or recovering from illness and injury and also encourages social interaction, so boosts mental as well as physical wellbeing.
Healthier Fleetwood will soon be launching a new programme of walking football, delivered by Fleetwood Town Community Trust, for residents who are referred by their GP or would benefit from the opportunity as a means to improve their health. Full details of how to get involved will be announced soon.
