GOOD NEWS - 9th November

Fleetwood will join the nation with events to mark Remembrance weekend including the annual parade and service on Sunday 12th November.

The first parade assembly point is The Kings Own Club, Adelaide Street at 10.00am, with more participants joining at the top of Warrenhurst Road for 10.30am before the service at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park, 11am. Deputy Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Sue Catterall and consort will attend this service along with the Chief Executive Officer of Wyre Council. Everyone in the community is invited to attend and to line the parade route along Lord Street to show their respects in memory of those who served.

And the town centre is looking fantastic, decorated with a display of huge poppies ahead of Remembrance Day, and the many beautiful flower beds.

Thank you to Fleetwood Town Council and the team of volunteers from Fleetwood In Bloom for all their hard work over, a wonderful tribute to the members of the Armed Forces Community. Thanks also to local resident Karen Thomas who has been busy creating more amazing crocheted and knitted decorations like this letterbox topper.

Congratulations also to Fleetwood Town Council, their community partners and the team of volunteers for hosting a very successful Fireworks Extravaganza last weekend.

Huge crowds enjoyed the display and entertainment at Marine Hall Gardens, in a safe setting and for most of the evening, in the dry!

There's an opportunity to join a discussion on ideas for the community.

An event has been arranged by Redeeming Our Communities (ROC) for Wednesday 28th February 2024 at the North Euston Hotel, 7pm to 9pm. Organiser Debra Green says, "We were commissioned via Home Office funding to run some community engagement initiatives in Lancashire which so far have included Burnley, Skelmersdale and now in Fleetwood." Debra adds, "We have organised over 250 of these over the last ten years or so around the UK. We are hoping to work with as many partners as possible and build on the great work already underway." > Reserve places at the ROC event here

Several members of The Capricorn Singers live in Fleetwood and the group has reached the finals of the Lancashire Choir of the Year.

The group would appreciate your support in claiming the 'People Choice' title and voting closes tomorrow, Friday 10th November. All the six finalists will perform at a special celebration concert in the Great Hall, Lancaster University on Wednesday 29th November. > Vote for the Capricorn Singers here

A fantastic turn out for the opening of the 'From Nothing To Now' photography exhibition last weekend.

Artist Hannah O'Hara, community groups and residents have created the displays at venues across town, telling the story of Fleetwood and the people who live here. You can see the exhibition until 28th November at Fleetwood Market, Fleetwood Museum and the library. > Follow the latest on Facebook here

Fleetwood and its heritage may soon be the subject for a new TV programme.

Anne Dickens, who grew up in Fleetwood and had family members involved in deep sea fishing off the old Icelandic grounds, is writing a screenplay called 'Wyre Light'. The story will centre on a trawlerman and his partner's struggle to obtain the mental health treatment she desperately needs.

Congratulations to all the winners at this week's Wyred Up Business Awards, especially the Fleetwood-based organisations.

Glazey Days, The Wok Box at Fleetwood Market, Affinity Lancashire Outlet Shopping and Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs were among those picking up well-deserved prizes. The presentation dinner was held at the Marine Hall, transformed for the evening into a Willy Wonka-themed wonderland!

There's Good news for the local swimming pools and the many local residents who enjoy using them.

Wyre Council have secured £142,000 of funding for pools at Fleetwood, Poulton and Garstang leisure centres from the Government's Swimming Pool Support Fund. This funding will help sustain these important, much-loved facilities and a bid for the second phase of the funding is also being made.
