GOOD NEWS - 5th January

Hello everyone, we hope you had a lovely Christmas and the New Year has started well for you.

Our first GOOD NEWS bulletin of 2023 focuses on health, fitness and wellbeing opportunities and several upcoming community events to look out for.

We will start though by looking back a couple of weeks to congratulate and thank Heather, Gill, Christine and everyone involved with the free Community Christmas Day Dinner. Over 90 local residents who would have been alone on the day, were able to enjoy a festive meal and the friendly company of others. The dinner was held at St Wulstans Church Hall, around 40 volunteers helped out and was supported by many kind donations from local businesses. Heather says, "Together we created something beautiful!" > You can read more about the Christmas Day Dinner here

The start of a year is often the time to make changes to health and lifestyle but the first steps can be the hardest to take. Whether it be improving fitness and mobility, stopping smoking, losing weight, volunteering or taking up a new hobby there’s a huge choice in and around Fleetwood and also the support to help you.

Gym memberships are very popular at this time of year. Maxi-Fitness, CB Fitness and YMCA Fleetwood welcome inquiries and if you are a little nervous of the environment, they can put you at ease about what’s involved. Swimming is a great way to stay healthy - we encourage residents of all ages to take advantage of the local pool and a reminder that FY7 resident children can swim for free at selected times ... see Fleetwood Town Council for more information on this offer.

There’s also several personal trainers who offer 1-2-1 support and classes to suit you. Don’t forget our fantastic open spaces - perfect for exercise in the fresh air. The Fleetwood Promenade parkrun event is every Saturday morning and keep an eye out for the free, fun challenges on he Fleetwood Wellbeing Way. > We share details of the sports and fitness opportunities on our website. Giving up smoking is on many people's wish lists but even if you have tried before, the message is "it's never too late to quit."

The health concerns of smoking are well-known, we prefer to focus on the benefits of quitting, not least the improved quality of life for you and your family. Getting the right help can boost your chances of successfully quitting by up to 3 times and the Quit Squad offer a wide range of support. These include regular drop-in sessions at the town's GP surgeries and in the outpatients department at Fleetwood Hospital. Call 0800 328 6297 or visit the website quitsquad.nhs.uk for more information, tips and support to stop smoking.

Managing your weight is key to reducing associated health risks - Wyre Council and Slimming World host a 12-week funded programme for residents age 18+ with a BMI of 30 - 45. There have been some great success stories and you can read them here.

> If you'd like to know more about the programme email community@wyre.gov.uk And for a little extra support to take control of your health, have a chat with the Fleetwood Social Prescribers. If you are a registered patient with a Fleetwood GP surgery, one of the knowledgeable link workers can help you to find something that matches your wellbeing goals and to achieve them.

Ask at your surgery about social prescribing or we can put you in touch with the team through Healthier Fleetwood.

Healthier Fleetwood is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the physical and mental health of the Town's residents by connecting them to each other, services and voluntary groups in the community. As an individual's confidence grows they take more control of their own wellbeing and an active role in the decisions that affect them. We are independent of but work in close partnership with the many organisations supporting the community.
