GOOD NEWS - 3rd April

There's a strong arts theme to this week's GOOD NEWS, starting with ...

Fleetwood's Market House Studios has announced that it has received funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to deliver the Pride & Place project.

This is an opportunity to showcase the Market House Studios focusing on the architectural, social or self-expressive within the local area through a 12-month programme of activity located at the Studios and Fleetwood Market. Four artists will conduct a series of workshops culminating in exhibitions. Applicants should provide a detailed working plan and propose an engaging workshop related to their specialist skill set within the Pride and Place theme. Workshops should be appropriate for a wide demographic of people and for those with a varied skill set. The project fee is £1,000 inclusive of preparation and delivery plus a materials budget of £600. The closing date for submitting a bid is Friday 26th April 2024 at 5pm.

As you might have seen, amazing local artist Christian Fenn is working on a mural along the coast at Cleveleys but is already planning his next work in Fleetwood!

The Big HeArts Project is about working closely with the local community to create visually inspiring, meaningful pieces of public art that raise awareness of current social issues, highlighting the important work of individuals, voluntary groups and professionals. Fundraising is underway to support the first of 10 proposed murals, anyone and everyone can be involved and donations from just £2 are all welcome.

There's two FREE performances of a specially commissioned show at Fleetwood Library coming up next week ...

'Clompin About' is an amazing adventure told with puppetry, music, dance, song and play. It's a love story of Lancashire caravan dwellers who adore and collect tales of bravery, magic, people and places. Presented by Goofus Theatre, Lancashire Archives and Local History the story takes inspiration from the County's folklore, researched by the project team and volunteers from the community. Funding came from the National Heritage Lottery Fund, thanks to National Lottery Players, and Lancashire County Council.

Performances are on Tuesday 9th April in Fleetwood Library at 11.30am and at 2pm. It's suitable for all ages and tickets are FREE but pre-booking is required.

(You can use the site as a guest or set up an account)

Printed copies of What's On at the Library and also of Wyre's Great Outdoors for April are available from the Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre, 1 - 7 Lord Street.

Our Information Centre has been up and running for 6 weeks and although it seems to have rained almost every day we've opened, it's generally been busy!

Visitors calling in to find out about what's happening in the community often stay for a chat over a brew and volunteers Kath and Sam make everyone feel welcome. Partner organisations are using the Centre now to meet with their clients and we'll be announcing some new drop-in events soon - please contact us if you'd like to know more about the space.

It's World Autism Acceptance Week and local businesses, organisations and voluntary groups are helping to raise awareness and support individuals and families.

At Affinity Lancashire Outlet they are developing initiatives including sensory 'grab bags' filled with fidget toys and calming objects; a visual guide to aid people's visit to the centre and hidden disability lanyards for those who might need extra support or understanding.

Fleetwood Town Community Trust introduced FREE sensory packs earlier in the season and they can be reserved for any of Town's remaining home fixtures.

Fleetwood Autism Buddies is a social-based peer support group for autistic adults, carers, friends & family aged 18+. They meet weekly and for other events.

Autism Initiatives assist children and adults of all ages through supported living accommodation and residential homes, community resource centres, social enterprises and much more. Healthier Fleetwood has worked alongside the fantastic, local Autism Initiatives team of staff and volunteers. They have a base at Farmer Parrs on Fleetwood Road and you can contact them on 01253 772664.

A reminder of the BIG day of FREE events at Marine Hall Gardens tomorrow, Thursday 4th April ...

There's the launch of Active Travel - an exciting programme of healthy activities including bike repair and upcycling, skateboarding lessons, social cycle rides, bump and buggy walks, time trials and much, much more. It's on from 12 noon until 4pm and there's no need to pre-book for any of the activities.

And from 1pm - 4pm, children and young people are invited to Active Fest ... arts and crafts, games and activities, music and karaoke and FREE food and drink. Again, there's no booking required, just turn up on the day and have fun!

It's the last chance to vote in the 2024 Coastal Radio Local Business Awards.

Individuals, community groups and businesses from Fleetwood are among the nominees in most categories ahead of the presentation evening on 19th April. Good Luck to everyone!

We hope to see many of you at this evening's Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting from 6.30pm at Emmanuel Mount Church.

Several residents and community groups have been in touch with us recently to say they are attending and we always hear about something new. If you can't make it along, a summary of the meeting will be sent as an extra GOOD NEWS bulletin this weekend.

Until the next time, take care.
