GOOD NEWS - 11th December

We start with exciting news for the future of Fleetwood ... Wyre Council has given the green light on plans to rejuvenate the town's waterfront.

Wyre Council has been working hard with external specialists Arcadis on a masterplan aimed at transforming the area along the waterfront at Fleetwood. On Tuesday councillors signed off the plans and officers will now begin developing business cases to underpin the four projects, designed to breathe new life into the town.

By starting work on these more detailed plans, the council hopes to be poised to bid for any Government-funded programmes which become available, as well as be in a prime position to market the Fleetwood seafront site at key events to attract inward investment.

Council Leader, Councillor Michael Vincent said: “The regeneration plans are a real blueprint for success. They have the potential to deliver a wide range of new and exciting activities to complement existing visitor attractions such as Fleetwood Market and the Museum and promise a real boost to the local economy.”

We have some news of our own this week ... Healthier Fleetwood will be moving to The Hub, at the former Fleetwood hospital building in the New Year!

It's always been the intention to join the growing number of partners based at the venue and with the next phase of facilities almost completed, now's the time. The opening date for the new Information Centre is still to be confirmed and how we operate will become clearer once we are in and welcoming visitors - we hope to be up and running by the end of January. With the Christmas and New Year holidays approaching, we will close our current premises on Friday 20th December and use the first weeks of 2025 to prepare for the move.

Our thanks to Regenda Homes for the opportunity to use their Lord Street site this year and we look forward to working with The Fleetwood Trust and the other organisations at The Hub in the future, continuing to create a vibrant, valuable community asset.

We're not the only ones on the move ... as this week Fleetwood Gym Boxing have been relocating to their fantastic new headquarters.

The refurbished Victoria Building on Poulton Road will soon be hosting their many sessions for all ages, boxing for wellbeing or for competition. Fleetwood Gym say, "This is a huge milestone for the Club, for the town and for amateur boxing in the region and we are really looking forward to showing off our new venue to the rest of Fleetwood and the wider public when we fully open our doors in the New Year".

And you can't think of 'Fleetwood' and 'boxing' without mentioning local legend and community leader, Jane Couch MBE.

Congratulations to Jane, who this week attended the World Boxing Council's annual conference in Hamburg to pick up a green belt for her achievements in the sport.

Congratulations also to the winners at the first ever Wyre Community Awards.

161 nominations were received for 37 different not-for-profit voluntary, charitable, faith or social enterprise organisations across the borough. Three nominees were selected across three award categories and for 'Making a Difference to Adults' ... Behind Closed Doors picked up the title.

Accepting the award on the group's behalf, Mandy said, "Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us. It’s been a tremendous three years since Behind Closed Doors was founded."

Jars of Joy were nominated for the awards and they are planning their Joyfest 2025 event.

We we will share more events and support in the New Year.
