The Healthier Fleetwood Story
Where do we go now?
After a couple of months ‘on the road’ and the kind support of Fleetwood Library as a temporary home, we found a new base to share what’s happening in the community.
Working in partnership with Regenda Homes the 'new’ Healthier Fleetwood Information Centre opened in February 2024 on Lord Street and it was an excellent location on the main thoroughfare, close to Fleetwood Market. Footfall and feedback from our visitors was very encouraging however the short-term costs and the landlord's long-term plans for the site meant we were on the move again, leaving Lord Street just before the end of 2024.
As the saying goes ... when one door closes, another opens and this time it was an opportunity not to be missed!
Prior to the pandemic, The Fleetwood Trust, a registered charity, purchased the town's former hospital building in the Pharos ward. While there was still an active NHS Outpatients department, the majority of the site was unused and derelict. The vision was to create a vibrant community hub, bringing together partners organisations to offer much needed services and support, and to offer spaces for local residents and groups to connect. After the disruption of the pandemic, work progressed well and by the end 2024, tenants included Regenda Homes, Blackpool & Fylde College, Fylde Coast Macmillan Cancer Support, The Pantry - Fleetwood's foodbank, the Volunteer Centre for Wyre and Fleetwood Town Community Trust Youth Hub.
Healthier Fleetwood was always going to be a partner in the project, now named The HUB Fleetwood and an ideal space became available in February 2025. The latest and we hope, the forever home for our information Centre is a bright and welcoming space, ideal for sharing details of around 150 opportunities in and around Fleetwood. We are open 4 days a week to chat with visitors about what's on offer to support their health and wellbeing, to foster community spirit AND it's also a great networking space with staff and volunteers from the many groups and organisations calling in all the time.
As an added bonus the Heart of the Hub community cafe opened adjacent to Healthier Fleetwood in the Summer of 2025 so visitors can also enjoy a hot drink or something to eat before or after browsing all the information on display. Social prescribers will host a weekly drop-in at the cafe from January 2026, using our facility to support their work to and continue the link between Healthier Fleetwood and the NHS Primary Care Network.
In the Spring of 2026, it will be 10 years since Mark and Karen called the first meeting and Healthier Fleetwood was formed.
One of the things we have always said is it will take at least a generation to really make a difference to the health and wellbeing of local residents and the wider community, so we’re only halfway there. It’s been a fantastic journey so far, many more highs than lows but there is still a lot of work to be done and we look forward to seeing what’s next for our wonderful town … the motto of Fleetwood is ONWARD!
