GOOD NEWS - 13th April

It was great to see Fleetwood busy in the sunny weather over much of the Easter weekend ... here's hoping for a lovely Summer this year.

There were many events and celebrations for the Bank Holiday with community groups working hard to provide some fun and support. Thank you to everyone who gave their time or donated to appeals including the teams at Dolly's Kiosk for a successful fundraising event and to S.P.A. Fleetwood who organised an Easter egg rolling at The Mount with a free egg for the children.

If you've been at Affinity Lancashire over the holidays, you might have seen something unexpected in the window of our Information Centre.

Thank you to local resident Robert for lending us an amazing LEGO model of RMS Titanic, which took him about a month to complete. Robert lives with Parkinsons and enjoys building the models as he finds it therapeutic and restful. He is also a volunteer, supporting others with debilitating conditions, and their carers. The photo doesn't really do the model justice - it will be on display until the end of the month, around the anniversary of the tragic voyage in April 1912.

Did you know? The anchors and chains for the RMS Titanic passed through Fleetwood on their way to the Belfast shipyard. Constructed in the Hingley works, Netherton, they arrived by night train from nearby Dudley before being carried across the Irish Sea by steamer, arriving on 5th May, 1911.

At our Information Centre on Tuesday 18th April we host the first of a new drop-in session with the charity Dad Matters.

Local coordinator Eric will be available from 11.15am to 12.15pm to share the support available for dads-to-be and those with children under 2 years of age. It's about encouraging dads to be positive role models and giving them the help they need to deal with life's challenges.Dates and times for further drop-ins with Eric will be announced soon but if you can't make it in person please visit the Dad Matters website or follow the Facebook page.

And on Friday 21st April, we're delighted to host the popular drop-in with the team from West Fleetwood Computer Clinic.

If your having trouble with your tech or need help getting connected, call in for a chat with the knowledgeable volunteers for advice about smartphones, laptops, tablets and PCs. It's a FREE session from 11am to around 2pm and the kettle's on too! There's also regular West Fleetwood Computer Clinics at The Rossal Tavern, Fleetwood. > See their Facebook page for more information.

A couple of opportunities that may be of interest to community groups ...

Supported by the Police & Crime Commissioner, the Safer Lancashire Neighbourhoods Fund is now open and community partnerships, organisations, local charities, Parish/Town Councils can apply for £1,000 to £10,000. There are funding principles and criteria including that bids address one or more of the priorities in the Police and Crime Plan. > See full details of the Fund here.

Community Reuse is a Lancashire-wide service that helps provide quality second-hand items such as garden tools and pots, children's toys, winter coats, sleeping bags, duvets, blankets and furniture to individuals and families in need. Community groups are invited to apply to the service and support their clients. > Visit the Reuse 360 Hub website for registration and more information

And finally ... our best wishes to Helen, Julie, Vicky and all the volunteers from the local team at Blackpool Macmillan Cancer Support as they officially open their new Information Centre at The Hub, in the Fleetwood Hospital building next week. We look forward to hearing about their plans and continuing to work with them in the future. Until the next time ... take care.
