GOOD NEWS - 22nd June

At this time of year, it's busy every weekend in Fleetwood so ... there's another busy weekend ahead in Fleetwood!

Saturday 24th June is Armed Forces Day, marking the culmination of a week of national events and activities to celebrate and thank our servicemen and women. There's loads happening in and around Marine Hall and the Promenade including a Flag Raising ceremony on The Mount at 11am plus displays of military vehicles, model boats, an afternoon concert, tug-of-war competition, paddle boarding and kayaking. The Coast Guard watch tower at Rossall is also holding an Open Day.

At the time of writing, timings for the full schedule haven't been published - please keep an eye on local social media pages including our own for updates.

And in another example of the fantastic support for Veterans from Fleetwood Town Community Trust, they hosted a game of football in the new dome at the Poolfoot Complex - a chance to share experiences and camaraderie. You can read more and watch a video report with interviews on the Granada Reports website.

Also on Saturday from 10.30am is the Big Beach Clean with The Bay: A Blueprint For Recovery and the Wyre Council Rangers.

On this community litter-pick you will learn all about the damaging effects of plastic pollution, as well as how you can log items like 'ghost' fishing gear - contributing to nature's recovery along our coastline. Meet on the Central Beach, the session is supervised, equipment is provided, please wear suitable clothing and footwear.Families are welcome and you can just turn up on the day but more information is available on The Bay's website, and reserving places is appreciated by the organisers.

Looking a little further ahead to some more community events coming up ...Fleetwood Methodist Church is hosting a Small Business Market Day on Saturday 1st July from 11am to 3pm. Come along to browse and buy from over 25 stalls hosted by amazing, local craftspeople and small businesses plus a prize tombola, music, kids activities and a face painter. See their Facebook page for more and to get in touch about booking a stall.

Also on 1st July, we'll be opening our Information Centre at Affinity Lancashire for the next of our Summer Saturdays. We'll be joined by some of the team from Fleetwood Town Community Trust for pebble painting and activities - find out more about all their work supporting health and wellbeing from 11am to 1pm.

The Friends of Memorial Park hold their annual Fun Day on Saturday 8th July. The event from 11am to 3pm raises funds to purchase new play equipment in the park for local residents to enjoy. On the day there will be stalls, a bouncy castle, kids' rides, games and more! Please support this event if you can.

Although most of us are enjoying the lovely sunshine and the opportunity to spend time outdoors, we all have to be aware of the importance of skincare and sun protection.

Fleetwood's Primary Care Network (PCN) staff are visiting local schools to let children know ways they can stay safe while having fun. The schools receive an accreditation for being Sun Safe and their pupils can buy special UV bracelets which alert them when levels are too high. If you'd like to get involved please contact the PCN on 01253 958493.

We like to share Good News from the many community hubs around Fleetwood and this week look at some great work coming out of Westview Community Association.

Among the many groups and activities hosted at the venue is the Chatty Lunch Club, gardening group, back-to-school uniform bank and much more. They also offer FREE 6-week courses to learn how to cook low-cost meals and to complete Level 1 Food Hygiene certificate. Attendees also receive a free appliance for them to prepare meals at home. The response has been very positive, this is typical ... "The course was great. I liked the fact there were only 3 of us. The course tutor was ace; she was very approachable and nice to be around. I have learnt a lot on how to be safe in the kitchen. I would like to do more cooking courses if they become available."

If you'd like to know more about the courses or any of the other great opportunities at Westview, please get in touch by email to projects@westviewcommunity.org.uk

Back at Fleetwood Methodist Church, their wonderful new outdoor space is now available for the 'Stay & Play' toddler and parent group meeting on Thursdays from 10am to 12.30pm. The Church welcomes inquiries from other community groups about using the space, please see their Facebook page or call 01253 852284.

We had a terrific morning last Friday at the Information Centre for our Chatter Cafe. Great conversations with visitors, the volunteers from The Walnut Tree, experts from West Fleetwood Computer Clinic and the social prescribers. Join us every Friday from 11am to 1pm to find out more about your community.

We look forward to seeing you all soon, keep sending in your Good News ... until the next time, take care.
