Men’s Shed is now a shop too!
Local resident and Healthier Fleetwood trustee Pauline Kennedy opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and explaining how we’d change the format a little again this month to encourage conversation. From the chatter in the room before we started, it was working!
Pauline told us that Fleetwood had been recognised in the Health Service Journal Value awards for the way the NHS was working together with the Community. We will find out the results at a ceremony in Manchester later this month.
As there was no formal agenda for the meeting, the ‘open floor’ part of the evening began. We heard how the Harmony & Health singing groups will be taking part in Make Your Own Kind of Music at Marine Hall on Sunday 5th June.
Fylde Coast YMCA is launching their next Couch to 5k programme to help residents improve their fitness but at their pace. Andrea said how she’d taken part before and was now running further but it was about taking small steps to change your health and life. More at www.runtogether.co.uk or telephone 01253 882105.
Mark is hosting a free relaxation course at Fleetwood Library, every other Friday afternoon at 2pm, the next one is Friday 10th May. The sessions are about taking time to be still, learning how to relax mind and body and open to anyone. Just turn up or call into the Library in advance for more information.
Jacob and Jamie have set up a monthly LGBT coffee morning at the Thomas Drummond, Wetherspoons. Usually it will be the first Saturday of the month, 12 non to 2pm although just for this month (4th May) it’s just until 1pm. There is a Facebook event page. Andrea from the Milton Neighbourhood Centre offered to work with them to find a location for future events.
Just Good Friends Fleetwood continue to offer great support for anyone in the community feeling isolated. Their meetings on Thursdays are now so popular they’ve moved to a bigger venue, the New Venture Club on Warren Street and meet there at 10am as well as the Tuesday morning session at the Highbury Club and Monday’s games afternoon at the Library. More on their Facebook page.
Derek said there was a dog training course at St David’s Church Hall, Larkholme Lane on Tuesday evenings. Four legged friends of all standards of behaviour were welcome! More information from Beryl on 01253 865837 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Pagan is one of the founders of the new Fleetwood Sister Shed and told us more about some of the activities they were starting up to support residents. The group meets on Tuesday evening at Milton Neighbourhood Centre and all their news can be found on their Facebook page.
Mal said how she felt there were very few activities and groups for people with disability. Others at the meeting made suggestions and offered to speak with Mal after the meeting about what was available.
Jackie is part of the NHS Enhanced Health and Wellbeing teams working in the Town and explained she and her colleagues were available to support residents in practical ways such as accompanying them to the groups and activities being discussed. Referrals to the team can be made via your GP.
Margaret reminded us that on the first ever Celebrate Fleetwood day will be on Bank Holiday Monday in Euston Gardens with loads of free music and entertainment from local performers and groups. The event runs from 10am to 4pm.
Danielle from Lancashire Adult Learning announced that on Wednesday 5th June there would be a showcase of the many free courses they offer to residents including Maths and English, I.T., microwave cooking, first aid, chair-based exercise and many more. The event will be from 4pm at Emmanuel Church and lead into the next Healthier Fleetwood Open Meeting. Many more details of this event will be shared in the coming weeks. Mo asked more about whether the courses could be delivered to existing groups like Just Good Friends and Danielle confirmed that’s how they will work.
David invited everyone to attend the ANON art exhibition at YMCA Lofthouse Building on Friday 3rd May to see the work of local residents. The next, free 10 week course will start later in May, enquiries to Healthier Fleetwood by email email@example.com or to the answerphone 07399 093835.
There is an open day at the Lofthouse Building on Monday 13th May from 2pm to 7pm showcasing the rooms and activities available at the venue plus there will be a Chatter Café, free art and more to enjoy. See the event page on Facebook.
Dr Spencer then asked a question, in many ways the same question that started Healthier Fleetwood … what does good health mean? We want to get the conversation going about what residents want to see in their community to improve health and wellbeing and take more control over the decisions. Just from a few minutes conversation it was clear there was a wide range of ideas. Gail suggested making a note of all these ideas and seeing what the common themes were so we will be arranging a time and place to meet in the next couple of weeks to look at this. Details will be announced soon and residents will be invited to attend and contribute.
Pauline thanked everyone and closed the meeting.
Our thanks to Emmanuel Church for their continued support and their hospitality, especially John who looks after us on the night and contributes to the vibrant discussion.
Next meeting, Wednesday 5th June at Emmanuel Church, Mount Road form 6.30pm.
